Question about 1991 Volvo 240

1 Answer

I replaced the timing belt and was certain that all things went back in the right place. It cranked up OK, but after a few minutes, the check engine light came on. The engine started shaking at low idle. I test drove it, and it runs pretty rough when you get started, but when you are up to speed (60 mph) it's smooth. Why does this surge happen?

Usually this symptom you described indicates a camspocket is off one tooth, bring the engine to top dead center cylinder # 1 firing stroke and double check the cam spocket is lined up with its appropriate mark, be sure the crank shaft pulley mark or notch is lined up to the zero mark on the motors front cover at the time of the cam sprocket timing mark line up check, also be sure there are no damaged or leaking vacuum lines.

1990 Oldsmobile toronado will not crank

If your check engine light is on get it scanned. If not pull the camshaft sensor and make sure the magnet is still in place on the cam shaft. You might need to crank it once or twice to turn the camshaft.

2007 chevy 2500 died while driving down the road. Lights/radio still work

The battery light was on because the engine stopped running. The alternator was not charging the battery.
On a model that new, if the engine did overheat the computer could kill it. A stuck thermostat comes to mind. But your temp gauge should have been on the hot side.
Its also possible something locked up and is preventing the engine from cranking, such as the water pump or alternator. You may need to remove the belt to verify. If the belt is slipping it would not power the water pump to keep the engine cool.

I replaced my water pump and now i lost time> how do i fix it

You'll need to remove the timing belt and get back in to the engine. Be certain to get No. 1 cylinder to TDH , top dead cylinder, look for your cam timing marks, be certain these are dead on when installing thge belt. Start at the crank and wrap the belt to the first cam being certain there is no slack in it, be certain all of the slack is taken up by the tensioner. After it is in place rotate by hand the engine and be certain it hold its timing. I'll admit I usually ask for a second set of hand to help hold the belt or cams in position.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Honda Civic 1988 1.5 - will not turn over

timing belt might have not been tight enough a nd it jump a couple of teeth causing the valve to hit the piston. see if you can rotate the engine either way clockwise or counter clockwise if you can re time the engine.

The same thing happened to my 94 volvo 960 the engine belt was having the same problem, i changed it the belt, it was fine for a few miles after that it just died, does not fire, not sure if it is getting fuel, but the mechanic says the timing belt went off. you may have to check the crank sensor on yours.

crank shaft sensor? I've had these be bad in a couple of vehicles, and I spent weeks/months worrying about the possible cause. Just a possible thought.
