Question about 1997 Ford Contour
97 Ford Contour GL 2.5 L V6. Stalling out. Auto shop told me I needed to replace 3 oxygen sensors. Would this really fix it. Someone told me they were only for improving the gas mileage and not related to why engine would stall out. When I give it gas, it seems to prevent it from stalling.
They are not only for improving milleage, but play a crusual key for ECM to give out how much fuel to mix with air to have proper combustion hence not stalling when accelerated. But Oxygen sensors are expensive and even you have them replaced , this is not going to solve your problem since gum has built up at your throttle valve over the years. Have another shop to clean your throttle body first. Make an appointment so you can be there to see how dirty the throttle body is and also to make sure they actually take out the part to clean, not just spraying cleaner to the Air mass flow flap valve. After the throttle body cleaned, take off the battery cables for 30 minutes to reset the ECM to its default state so it doesn't use data from your current state. You will see an improvement. Afterward, the problem is still existing then Have Auto Zone store diagnose free for O2 problem before replacing them. Cheers.

Check your PCV valve and attaching hoses also check the hose from the forward facing valve cover to the air intake if any are loose or cracked replace them a loss in engine vaccum my be the cause of your stalling out issue.NOTE: PCV valve about $6.00 Hoses around $8.00. if you do find the aformentioned, cracked loose hoses you may want to pull the air cleaner cover and inspect the corigated rubber air tube leading the the throttle body to see if engine oil was injested into the Air Tube if so remove the tube and clean with a degreaser. You with also want to clean MAF sensor you can do this by getting a can of aresol spray 'Tuner Cleaner' from 'Radio Shack' you will have to remove your MAFsensor to do so take care not to let anthing come in contact \ touch the two sensor sensor wires inside the MAF.
Also you may already be aware of this but you may be plauged with the engine 'Check Engine' light. The wiring used under the hood of your model vehicle is prone to deterioation of the emisions wiring insulation causing your car to throw codes. Check the recall for the wiring on the web from ford... Good luck.
