Question about 1998 Subaru Legacy

1 Answer

2001 Outback sluggish below 2000 rpms.

When I come to stop it feels like it is going to stall but doesn't stall. Then when I start to move the car is very sluggish below 2000 rpms. Once I get it above 2000 its fine. Have had new plugs and wires and a tune up at local station but that only seems to help for a day or two. It has gotten colder here overnight so I don't know if that is contributing to the problem. The check engine light came on a few months ago but then never came on again.

This may be a catalytic converter plugged up problem. Have a muffler shop take a look.

If it's fuel-injected, you may need to have the injectors cleaned, and also, any air filters should be changed at the same time along with gas filter/s. If it's carbureted, the same as above, but have someone clean the carburetor completely. Make sure all air hoses are attached correctly, securely and NOT broken. If broken, replace them.

2001 outback automatic stall.

When you changed the ****** fluid was it brown? If so I regret to inform you, you may need a new transmission. The brown color is due to the clutches in the trans, wearing down over time. Does it shift hard when you drive it? If it does that is another sign the trans has gone out the window.

Try replaceing the fuel filter and if that does not do it then it may be the pump. you can rent a fuel pressuer tester to test to see if fuel pump is going out. If you rent one and need to know how to check let me know and I will put the proccedure here for you.

Car hesitates/stalls when engine is warm and car starts to move.

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.

Sounds like a transmission problem. My car was doing that and it turns out it had a transmission fluid leak that had led to major transmission damage. The bad news: the entire transmission had to be rebuilt.
