Gas or anitfreeze are both petrolium based prducts. Check for leaks on both. Antifreeze has a sweet smell and is either green or orange if using Dex Cool (look in resivoir to confirm color or if its low) to diffrentiate the 2.

Google "1992 Ford Escort Recalls"

You will find this on several sites...

Recall Summary
FATIGUE CRACKS CAN DEVELOP IN THE SOLDER JOINT BETWEEN THE FUEL RETURN TUBE AND THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK.
Consequence
SHOULD A CRACK DEVELOP, FUEL VAPOR CAN ESCAPE FROM THETANK WHEN THE TANK IS FULL, AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL CAN LEAK FROM THE CRACK.FUEL LEAKS CAN RESULT IN FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.

You will likely find that since it is beyond 10 years, the recall on your vehicle won't be traceable and the recall will not now be covered by any dealer.

There are 2 items to check and they are easy to get at...1) the recall item and 2) the $3.00 fuel pump rubber seal. Both are located UNDER the rear seat and this is how to check.

Disconnect the battery ground cable (or both actually). Remove the rear seat cushion ( I don't recall if they are just friction fit or if there are little latches on each side down between the seat and seat back). When the seat is swung up out of the way you will see a metal cover with 4 screws and a wire harness of sorts. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector. Remove the four fuel pump cover screws and the ground strap. Remove the fuel pump cover. If there is leakeage from either source it will be evident right away. Nothing there? Move on but note that the fuel may show up only when the tank is full.

When putting it all back together, don't forget to pull the seat belt clasps through the holes provided.

That's as far as I am going to take you on this because I don't know your level of mechanical competence and I wouldn't want just anyone messing with fuel issue...ok?

    Good luck.

Check first if the smell comes from the engine bay. Check if the smell of gas there is stronger than usual. IF it is check the charcoal filter, the cylindrical canister that has a vacuum hose connected to it to filter the smell. Check if there are loose hoses. You may also want to check for openings on the wall that separates the cabin and the engine. Check the fuel tank and the fuel lines for leaks. It could also be that the car is running too rich that the smell can be noticed.

I have a 2003 freelander that smells of petrol whilst driving ive heard of this problem before but nwhat is the cause

Hi Paul:
The smell of petrol means that there is unburned fuel somewhere.
That is not good, and could be very bad, especially if it ignited.

I sincerely hope that you are not smelling this inside the vehicle while you are driving it.

Without running through a list of every possibility that I can think of, I'll make some suggestions.
1) When you smell the petrol, immediately pull over and shut the engine off. Lift the hood to access the engine and try to find the leak. Look at hoses, connections, fuel delivery components, gaskets. Look for wet spots, stains, wash marks where petrol may have moved dust and then evaporated.

Patience and a bit of time, and you should find it.

I'm also guessing that this is an external leak since you did not mention lack of power or backfiring.

Another possible is a failed hose connected to the fuel tank, or a faulty tank vent.

It's up to you. You're now detective Sherlock of the Petrol patrol.

Put a new in tank fuel pump in 3 days ago in my hyundai accent, but can smell petrol inside the car.

I would double check that your fuel tank is sealed. Fuel fumes can be very bad for your health and can be very dangerous. Sounds as though the gas line may be leaking, or the fuel pump seal is leaking.

Bad petrol smell

In most cases smelling gas inside the car comes from air entering the venting system from the engine compartment. Just a few drops can cause a strong smell. And a small leak may be tough to find.
It could be excess fuel going out the exhaust pipe, but your check engine light should be on if that were the case.

Smell of petrol inside the car

I had a similar problem with a 92 when I replaced the float/level sensor in the tank. Did you recently change the pump or sensor?
Check the tightness of anything you may have loosened or opened. There is also a line that usually drains water from the depression in which the filler cap sits. If you have a bad cap and even a minor overflow or spill from a fill-up, gas could leak into the trunk and once absorbed into the carpeting it is very difficult to remove the smell from the matting. I power washed mine with solvents and water based detergents, three times and let them air dry each time, finally placing an odor absorbing chemical in the trunk to solve the problem. Good luck hope this helps.
