Seals are leaking on you master cyclinder. Get it resleeved in stainless steel and never ever have a problem or simply replace it with a stock one. I would not recomend rebuilding wiht just a rubber seal kit.

an air leak would weaken the mix of fuel to air so giving you better fuel efficiency but a poor power output.
was my last answer not to your liking, re **** fuel consumption on all fiat/alpha cars.but it is true, ask any owner........14.7 average mpg.......£205 road tax.....(tax it for a year and quadruple its value...)

Gearbox

It sounds to me like the clutch is not working properly.
This may be an adjustment problem or signs of a worn clutch.
Try selecting 5th gear and with the handbrake on let out the clutch, if the engine stalls then the clutch is probably ok and may just need adjusted. If the engine doesn't stall then your clutch is shot and unfortunately its gearbox back out to fit a new clutch.
