I have the same promlem and it might be the same as yours...
I pulled a check engine light after the car had the sytems after 1 month. When the engine light finally came on I pulled the code and it says that one of the many speed sensors are bad. there is one at each tire on ABS models. I am currently finding this out and still working on finding out which one has the problem. Good luck.

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN THE ONBOARD COMPUTER HAS DETECTED A PROMLEM. YOU NEED TO HAVE IT CKD FOR STORED CODES. ANY REPUTABLE SHOP CAN DO THIS FOR YOU AND TELL YOU WHAT THE CODES MEAN. IF THE LIGHT IS ON STEADY YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.WITH THE LIGHT ON YOU ARE DRIVING IN WHAT IS CALLED LIMP HOME MODE ,THE COMPUTER GOES INTO A BASIC FUNCTION MODE AND .CAN CAUSE DAMAGE. HOPE THIS HELPS BILL
It could be anything. It can be even the simplest of things. You can't really know since your car s still working fine. The check engine is a warning light indicating that an error has been stored from the car s powertrain (engine or transmission sytem) run a scan to know what it is.
You cannot turn off the check engine light by changing the oil. Now if you are talking about your oil change reminder, this is covered in your Owner's Manual. the check engine light coming on means that one or more of the sytems monitored by your onboard computer system has failed. You must scan your computer system and repair whatever it is that has failed and caused the computer to turn the light on.
Hello, my engine light was on for a VERY LONG time and everytime I got it checked no one could tell me what the problem was because things always checked out fine. The "code" says its a loose gas cap or something, but it wasnt that. My 300M also was having A HARD TIME STARTING UP for about 8 months and leaking coolant for about a month. I finally found a mechanic who knew what he was doing; 1. Leaking Radiator 2. Coolant found in #2 or #3 cylinder. The cause of this was a busted HEAD GASKET. If your 300M has trouble starting and the Engine light stays on have a mechanic check your engine for a busted head gasket and see if all your cylinders are firing correctly. I had to pay $2600 for a new Head Gasket, Radiator and all new hoses plus labor. CRYING!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 2001 300M 130K - very well kept. Stuff happens...
The engine needs a correct air: gas ratio of 14.6:1 to perform. You need to check out your Fuel distributor. The engine light is on since there is not a correct mixture then it reports through the Oxygen Sensor. Other indication is at red light the engine is going to die. You are losing power since there is not enough combustion efficiency due to incorrect Air gas ratio.
