If it is not automatically releasing the park brake wnen car is started and put into gear there may be a more serious problem , There are also break release handles in the area .

Will steering column out of a 2000 grand prix gtp fit in a 1998 grand prix gt

Melissa, Did a search of parts at car parts.com, 2000 and 1998 Grand Prix steering columns do not look to be interchangeable.
1999 and 2000 could be interchangeable if they have the same options on wheel.

Car lock in park

Below is the procedure for unlocking your your gear shifter. your vehicle is equiped with a brake shift interlock which is and I'm sure you know this but if the brake is not pressed in it will not shift. I would check to see if you have a blown fuse for that circuit and also I am pretty sure if you brake lights are not working the same thing will happen. i hope this helps you and good luck.

Try this if rear drum brakes.Go in reverse about 8 feet and hit the brakes. This will self adjust the rear brakes and possibly fix the issue.Your rear brakes may have become locked.

you should be able to pull key out in neutral. It sounds like a brake pedal issue not making contact with switch for shifter. Happens a lot actually. Until you can get serviced do it like a manual for now and as I stated you should be able to pull keys out. Its a button behind brake pedal. Try pusing it but leave car in park. Its usually a green and black switch. Leave car e brake on though. Safety reasons. Hope this helps

Key will not turn ,to start engine

Hello, this common situation arises when the steering lock mechanism binds, usually because the wheels are jammed against the curb. And to solve this problem try to follow this steps.

1. Make sure the transmission is in park(for cars with automatic transmission )

2. Set the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling farther against the curb.

3. Pull hard on the steering wheel while turning it in both directions, if this doesn't free the wheel move to step 4.

4. Release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral, let up on the foot pedal just enough to rock the car slightly.

5. Turn the steering wheel again. The key should turn now.

Thanks

Can not turn the ignition key, to start car?

This is a very common situation that arises when the steering-lock mechanism binds, it is usually because the wheels are jammed against the curb.
Follow the instructions below to solve the issue:--
1) First of all make sure that the transmission is in park. Set the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling farther against the curb
2) Pull hard on the steering wheel while turning it in both directions. This will normally free the wheel, but if it does not help. then,
3) Release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. Let up on the foot pedal just enough to rock the car slightly.and now turn the steering wheel again. this time the key should turn now.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
