Peugeot 205 diesel - grinding noise on full lock.

Gents/Ladies, my diesel Peugeot 205 makes a grinding sound on full lock (both ways), & I would like to know what is causing this. I shall try as best as possible to list the symptoms. Firstly, the car has PAS & has done 75000 miles. Apart from the noise it is in fairly good condition & there is no undue or odd wear on the tyres & the car behaves as it should through bends & over bumps - no wander or obvious clunks. The noise only appears when full lock is applied & it is possible to keep turning the steering wheel even though full lock has been reached! Vibration can be felt at this point. A rudimentary examination of the roadwheels revealed no undue fore/aft movement & turning them by hand was noise free. Jacking up the car & turning the steering throughout its full travel saw no improvement either. My main questions to you Gents/Ladies, are: Why doesn't the steering 'stop' at full lock? Could it be play in the track rod ends & steering rack? Or could it be worn outer CV joints causing the racket? Or both? Or something I haven't thought of? The power steering fluid is topped up & the car got a new MOT last month. No gaiters are split & there is no evidence of grease/fluid loss. I don't really want to drive the car until I know whether this could be dangerous. Thanks, Boo.

May be the slip joint in the steering column is slipping in a rotational way stick your head under the dash and turn the wheel and watch the slip joint in the column if the lower part stops but the top part keeps moving get a new/ second hand stearing collum

When I turn or go over a dip in the road it makes a pop and grinding noise


I would say it sounds like cv joints need replacing.also check bushes and ball joints for play. If ok turn steering on full lock both ways.start with full lock on right turn pull away slowly if you get knocking noise you will know it's that side is worn and then do same on left turn on full lock.

Grinding gearbox


Check the oil level ,if need be pump some LM grease into the gearbox about a GREASE GUN FULL will do this will seal up any leaks once its warm and melts in a bit ,the noise was the lay shaft bearings or the drive gear shaft bearings to the crownwheel ,faily common on peugeots and citreons but make sure you check the level use EP90

I have a 99 Ford Superduty 7.3 Diesel. It is making a really bad grinding/screeching sound just after it starts and is warming up. It wouldn't ******* off all the way even after the key was turned


indicates that the starter motor is stuck in the ring gear
possibly faulty starter relay or starter solenoid
pull the starter as the pinion over ride clutch is probably damaged ( noise ) and have the start circuit and relay checked
have the starter bench tested for serviceability by an accredited auto electrician

It is a bit fiddly (your local library will get a Haynes manual in for you) you need decent tools, Halfords or Stanley will do, Argos or B+Q will not! you need a length of 10mm or 3/8 rod about a foot long to lock the crank. get back to me when you are ready and I will write more. email me at citroenchrisATmacDOTcom (I write it that way to stop spam)

Strange noise coming from under cam belt cover ...


Either the water pump pulley is failing or cam tensioner, its quite common on peugeots engines it can be fixed but its a pain to do if your not mechanically minded. the engine mounts have to come off. It shouldnt be expensive to put i the garage.

dont drive it though it may snap and wreck the engine.

As weird as it may sound, i'd check the power steering fluid. An empty power steering fluid tank will make the power steering grind and make weird noises, and having it at full lock will worsen the noise and have no fluid to build pressure it might starting jumping the steering around a bit. If the power steering is OK then you will need to take the rear drums apart to check for any broken retainer springs preventing the pads from returning into place and it will keep braking and grinding. Could also just be some rust or a broken off metal part in the drum also, but either way you will need to take the drums off and inspect the springs, clips and pads to ensure everything is OK and nothing stays jammed into braking position. Also be sure to verify the rear brake cylinders in the drums, as it may also be them that don't return to the initial position and keep the brakes on.
