It is definetly in your best interest to have the strainer on the fuel pump, you certainly don"t want anything that could be in your tank going through your pump unfiltered, It is a good way to burn up the pump.

I hope this helps.

How do i see that my fuel pump is bad?

  1. Discharge the pressure in your fuel system by either removing the fuel pump fuse or disconnecting the inertial cutoff switch and starting the car, allowing it to run until it stalls out. Then turn the key off, remove the key, and let the car sit for a minute or more.
  2. NOW REPLACE YOUR FUEL FILTER (This will save time later.)
  3. Attach a fuel pressure test meter to the test port on the fuel rail.
  4. Insert your key and turn the key switch from OFF to ON (not "START" but ON) three times, holding it at OFF and ON for between 1-2 seconds each time.
  5. Return the key switch to OFF
  6. Look at the fuel pressure gauge. It should read at least 35 p.s.i. (minimum), and should HOLD that pressure for at least ten minutes. If it does not hold the pressure, DISCHARGE THE FUEL PRESSURE again as described above, and REPLACE THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR.
  7. RE-PRESSURIZE THE FUEL SYSTEM AGAIN (the key switch off & on thing above), and then start the vehicle normally. Look at the fuel pressure. Is it at least 40 p.s.i.? YES? Good so far. NO? Either the fuel pump is bad, you have a fuel leak somewhere (should be obvious), or the fuel pickup strainer in your gas tank is clogged.
  8. TURN THE KEY BACK OFF, and be sure you're retaining pressure. If the pressure begins falling immediately, suspect either a stuck injector (would make the car run rough and the "CHECK ENGINE" light stay on), or a defective check valve at the fuel pump (which means you need a new fuel pump).
  9. If the pressure fell with the key off, turn the key back ON. Does the fuel pump have to run for more than 3 seconds to regain full pressure? If so, either your fuel pump is bad or your fuel strainer is clogged. Either way you will need to pull the pump and strainer out of the tank to check.
  10. If your strainer is clogged, your pump is probably fine... just replace the strainer. If the strainer is clean, your pump is bad. Replace your pump.
  11. DON'T WASTE TIME TRYING TO SAVE THE GAS IN THE TANK. I guarantee it is contaminated with water, rust, and other garbage. DISPOSE OF ALL REMAINING FUEL IN YOUR GAS TANK, AND REPLACE IT WITH NEW FUEL.

What are the steps to replace the fuel pump on a chevy trailblazer 2002

This is what it looks like and it is located in the gas tank:

c17hydro_197.gif
First, you'll need to use up as much fuel as possibly, if not, you'll have to drain the tank. Next:

  1. Drain the fuel tank.
  2. Support the fuel tank.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Negative battery cable
    • Filler neck from the tank
    • Shield from tank and tank straps
    • Fuel lines and vapor hose from pump
    • Electrical connection from fuel pump
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel pump/sending unit assembly by turning the locking ring (located on top of the fuel tank) counterclockwise using a spanner wrench
    • Fuel pump from the fuel lever sending device
  • NOTE
The fuel pump strainer must be in a horizontal position when the fuel sender is installed in the tank. When installing the sender assembly, make sure that the fuel pump strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:
      • Fuel pump in tank with new seal around opening

      NOTE

The fuel pump strainer must be in a horizontal position when the fuel sender is installed in the tank. When installing the sender assembly, make sure that the fuel pump strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.

      • Tank and connect fuel lines and vapor hose
      • Tank to the frame. Torque the fasteners to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
      • Shield
      • Fuel filler neck and clamp
      • Negative battery cable
    2. Refill the tank.
    3. Run the engine and check for leaks.

    NO START BENZ 190D

Hello I'm an M.B. tech.. It sounds like the fuel strainer is clogged. It is a very common problem on M.B. diesel engines of that era. Diesel fuel develops algea inside the fuel tank and after a period of time it clos the strainer. The strainer is at the bottom of the fuel tank where the big fuel hose attatches to the tank. The hose unscrews frome the strainer and then the strainer unscrews from the tank. There is a filter on the strainer that can be cleaned and reinstalled. In the engine compartment there is a small primer pump that is by the fuel rack inline with the feed hose from the tank. If you turn the knob(clear or white plastic) on the pump it will retract allowing you to use it as a hand pump. If when attempting to retract hand pump it is sucked back down and will not stay retracted that means you have a restriction in the line- your fuel strainer is clogged is the most likley problem. replace both fuel filters during repair for best results. Good Luck
