Question about 1989 Honda Accord 4 Door

1 Answer

Is my catylitic convertor stopped up?

My 89 accord/4cyl.f.i. has almost 300k miles and its been running funny lately.at lower rpm range it spits&sputters like a couple plug wires are crossed, but when you stomp the gas or get above like,50mph,there is no noticable miss.now,it does need plugs&wires,so,it may have a misfire.exhaust system appears to be original and quite worn,so,if it turns out to be an ignition issue,im still curious as how to diagnose the catylitic convertor.will it just shut down,?will it smell like egg farts,?will it catch on fire?thanks to anyone with info

Gotta love those Hondas, 300k and still going. I would say you are on track as faar as needing wires and plugs, also bare in mind you do have a few miles and there is going to be some wear and loss of compression which eaquals loss of power. Try adding some Restore to your engine oil after a few times using it there is a noticable difference. You can get it at any parts store and even WalMart It comes in a silver can with black letters.

As far as your cat, The best way to check it is by using a vacuum gauge, However if you don"t have one, yes the cat will glow a bright orange and also does give off a rotten egg smell.

Good Luck.

many things can cuase this, the first thing to do is have the computer scaned, there should be codes it there, these codes will give a general idea of the problem. you should also check the trany fluid level,(engine warm,in park, level ground). there may be a few things to check, the distributor cap and rotor, also the wires. you may have weak fuel preasure,or even a bad module, so start by having the codes pulled and will go from there, also it doesnt start now, check the fuel preasure and also check for spark at the plugs.

I failed my smog, the guy said it was a gross polluter. and that it gives out to much emission from the exhaust. how do i fix that

That would all depend on which readings it failed on.high Co's would be fuel related(running to rich),oxygen sensor failing, dirty air filter, fuel drenched engine oil, failing catylitic convertor, timing incorrectly set, incorrect valve lash settings,High hydrocarbons would be spark related(misfire, poor cap and rptor, bad spark plugs, plug wires. does it have visable smoke at exhaust? one of the main causes of failure is if car all in all runs great,no check engine light,no reason why you should think it should fail is that vehicle was not warmed up enough prior to emmisions test ran beleave it or not.you need to take car out on highway drive it hard for 10 miles or so make sure catylitic convertor is fully heated up and car is out of warm up stage and then take to do test.alot of times people fail to do this and take there car at lunch etc to testing station down street where you then jump out and car sometime can sit for 20-30 minutes before test ran, which leaves car still in the warm up stage, running rich until fully warmed up which is to late once car is testing mode.vehicle made need nothing except to be nice and hot,and people leave testing place thinking that it needs costly repairs and in reaLITY does not

My 2004 Audi A4 1.8T just started running rough. At idle it cutting out and wont go over 20mph. Had the timing belt replaced 20,000 miles ago. Any ideas?

check the catylitic convertor, it may be rstricted disconect the exhaust down pipe from manifold and strat engine, if the problem goes, replace the unit.

1999 Jeep cherokee shuts down when stopped at a stop light

There are several possible problems that range from a blocked catylitic convertor to a bad throttleposition sensor. The catylitic convertor is easy to check. With the vehicle running put your hand by the tail pipe to see how much flow you have. If it feels anemic then you have an exhaust problem which is most likely the cat. If no joy on this then check your throttle position sensor by using an ohm meter to see if you have any continuity. Throttle postion sensors generally open up and you will get no continuity. All the other sensors if bad will have a default setting in the computer and the only way to tell if they are bad is to read the trouble codes. Hope this helps.

O2 sensors

you have four one on each side of engine in exhaust manifold these are your front sensors this is what computer reads the rear ones are past the convertor all they do is make sure the catylitic convertors are doing there job.

If it is running fine i would leave it alone
if you wanna replace them just replace the front ones factory run about 160 each

most likely a clogged fuel filter or a stopped up catylitic convertor
if it is the convertor it will be very very hot possible even glowing.
if you dont remember when you replaced filter then replace it it is due regardless
