2005 MGM - Need to change coolant

For the purpose of draining the coolant, where are the drain points on a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis? Assume there could be three? Radiator and each cylinder bank? But really don't know.

There is only one drain point. Drain the coolant from the system at the radiator. This will remove coolant from the engine. Be sure and have the heater set to hot. Flush the system with a water hose. Fill the system with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Do not use tap water. Start the engine with the radiator cap off and keep adding coolant until it will take no more and you see no more air bubbles escaping from the radiator. If there are schrader bleed valves on the engine cooling system use them to remove any more trapped air. Put the cap on and start the engine and let it run for 15 minutes while you check for leaks. I would replace the thermostat at this time as it is just good preventive maintenance.

Sounds like you are due for a coolant system flush and fill and a new thermostat. I doubt the thermostat is your problem but since it's on a $7 part and the coolant system needs to be drained to change it I recommend doing so when you perform the flush and fill. Be sure you purchase either pre-mixed coolant or mix undiluted coolant with distilled water at a 50/50 ratio.

Can't find radiator drain on 1997 mercury marquis

It may not have one.
If there is no fitting on the bottom or the back side of the tanks, you would need to remove the lower hose to drain it.

Trouble draining coolant on 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis

The engine holds coolant and so does the heater core, the core not much but the engine holds maybe 2 or so gallons, the engine has coolant in the intake ,heads and block. to say you can drain it all complete is impossible, unless you find drain plugs on the side of the engine block and remove them, there is one on each side of the block, if you removed those you would get 90% of the coolant, with also draining the radiator. the only other way would be with a flush machine. i am a tech and the way you said the coolant was clean and you drained all you could then i would say if you keep doing it the way you are you will be fine, i drain mine the same way every year which is to soon for some but not me and i have never had a problem. the only time i drain the blocks at work is when people dont change the coolant for years and it gets rusted, then i remove the plugs. keep doing the flush the way you are and it will be fine, good day. have a good day.

Were is the drain to drain coolant?

if it has a drain plug it would be on one of the lower corners of the radiator. If there isn't one, which I think the case is. Remove lower coolant hose from radiator and you'll be able to remove coolant that way.

Instructions to fix a thermostat on 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis

Thermostat should be at the base of the upper hose where it connects to the intake manifold.

You should see two bolts securing the housing to the intake. You will need to drain some coolant from the system first via the radiator drain before you remove the housing.

When reinstalling the housing, be VERY careful to not over tighten the bolts as they will strip/break way easier than you want to know.

Then, refill system, start up and idle while adding coolant till system is full.

Make sure to have heater on high during this process to remove any possible air from the core.

loosen pressure cap slowly at coolant tank to relieve pressure, when pressure is relieved remove cap, place a suitable container under drain valve at bottom of radiator open drain valve.when coolant has stopped draining, close valve.then remove thermostat,[this is a good time to replace t.stat since it must be removed to refill cooling system],disconnect heater core coolant supply hose at rear of intake manifold.add coolant thru t.stat opening until coolant comes out of coolant supply hose fitting, reinstall hose and tighten[not to tight] reinstall thermostat o ring and thermostat.add coolant to tank until the coolant level is between the COOLANT FILL LEVEL marks.select the maximum heater temperature and blower speed settings run engine until it reaches operating temp.add coolant until the coolant level is between the COOLANT FILL LEVEL marks.turn off engine allow it to cool, recheck coolant level, add as needed .ford requires this procedure to avoid engine damage due to trapped air.
