Can you mix ATF Plus 3 with ATF Plus 4 transmision fluid?

I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 sport with a 46re......I changed my trans filter and bought 4 quarts of fluid from autozone. i asked for plus 3, but the sales rep. said i can use Plus 4. since i added the plus 4 i am having a hard time up-shifting when the truck is at operating temp.

do you think its because of the mix of fluids, or something else?

Yes! mix of fluids. I'd drain down the tranny replace the fluid (with what's recommended) run it for a bit and drain it down and add new fluid again. The reason I recommend draining it down and replacing twice to the fact that much of the fluid is held in the torque converter and such and when you change fluid in your tranny you never really capture it all. Chrysler trannys and trans axles are quite sensitive to their fluid. I would do this ASAP before damage to the tranny.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

No, this is more likely an indication that you have deeper problems within the transmission.

The 4 speed transmission electric overdrive is a A500 or A618 old numbers now called a 42re transmission both take the same pan gasket and filters. Fluid type is located on dip stick ATF (7176) sames as dex II/merc ATF plus fluids are a special mix use ONLY that type.

My ram 1500 2w drive has trouble getting out of first gear. After i hit a certain rpm and let go of the gas pedal it will shift...But after get past that and doing 35 or higher and try to push quickly on...

Is there any check engine light on ? It sounds like your transmission is slipping ! Pre 2004 dodge trucks mainly had the the 46re trans wich requires service every 30k wich includes adjustimg the primary and secondary bands ! With my experience this never gets done and leads to transmission problems ! At this point the damage is done so you can try some things - first flush the transmission and drop the pan and have the bands adjusted and put in a new filter , refill with atf plus 4 fluid only and substitute 1 qaurt of fluid with lucas trans treatment and add greased lighting additive and drive for several days ! I did this on a dodge truck i bought that was having problems and it fixed the majority of the problems a computer update fixed the remainder of the problems and she has been running perfect since !

Is 7 quarts of transmission fluid too much for an 05 ram 5.7 hemi engine?

Is your trans an auto trans? If so, you should have the 45rfe trans which would take 5-7 quarts to refill after a filter change.

Use only Chrysler or Valvoline ATF+4 fluid.

1998 dodge ram 1500 2wd 5.9 eng. how to change

just drop the transmission pan to drain it and the filter is right there in the valve body,DON'T mess the band adjustment, they are only to stop the planetary gears so you can go into reverse, there is no such thing as adjusting bands! that went out with the fifties!

2004 dodge ram 1500 3.9 auto trans problem

Check fluid level first. See if fluid smells "burnt". The signs are the tranny is dying. Don't go far in this vehicle until you've taken it to a shop you trust. They will pull the drain pan and inspect. Next sign of death will be a whining in the transmission as the suction strainer for the pump becomes clogged with the clutch material. Good Luck.
