Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

Installing an aftermarket stereo in 1996 explorer...sound issues.

I'm installing a sony aftermarket stereo. I have a 1996 ford explorer with the stock radio, no CD, no changer, just a tape deck. I have power to my new stereo and the speaker wires are connected, but for some reason I can't get sound out of the speakers. I'm puzzled...is there an amp wire that I need to connect in order to get sound?

You may have a factory amplifier in the rear of the explorer in the right cargo panel. You need to supply power to it by connecting the amp power on (Blue/White I think) in the dash to a power source (such as red on your stereo harness) so it comes on with the key. If you do have the amplifier, that's why you have no sound.

Does the new stereo come on? Check that you connected the speaker wires correctly. Both positive and negative speaker wires from the stereo need to be connected to the speaker leads in the vehicle.

Look for inst. lites fuse and clean the connectors at the fuse panel. The stereo speakers might have come loose from a poor wiring job. Look under the dash below the radio. Sometimes the dash light switch gets worn and doesn't work until you mess with it a little.

These cars have a factory amp system that will not operate correctly with an aftermarket stereo. You have two choices. You can either run new wires to the speakers your self which would bypass the factory amp. Or you can order the premium sound system Interface here http://www.myinstallkit.com/FORD/1990%20(90)%20FORD%20THUNDERBIRD%20Radio%20-%20Stereo%20Installation%20Kit.htm scroll about half way down the page.

I would get an adapter harness that will plug into your existing vehicle plug, and the wires are color coded to match up to most aftermarket stereos. You could check e-Bay, or a local automotive audio store for the adapter harness.
