Question about 2000 Chevrolet S-10

Heat doesn't come out of the heater if the outside temperature is below 45 degrees. Also my truck seems to **** or miss on the interstate only when the heat or A/C is turned on?

What should the temperature of the heater core inlet hose be?


heater hoses run from the rear of the block to the water pump. One hose into the heater should be hotter than the other because heat is transferred in the heater in the car. . The cooling system draws water from the bottom of the radiator ( water pump inlet)which is always cooler than the top hose and dispenses it throughout the engine and heads including the heater core. It is then pushed past the thermostat with all the heat from the engine to the top of the radiator where it is cooled down by the air passing through the radiator . Check that the air vent for the cabin is set to recirculated cabin air and not fresh air from the outside as it will require recirculated air to increase in temperature to work properly

If the cooling system is functional, yes.
The ac condenser adds heat to the air coming thru the radiator when the ac is on. If the engine cooling system is weak, the extra heat will make the engine run hot.
Low coolant flow thru the radiator is a common cause.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with a digital climate control system. The heat quit working, it doesn't blow out any heat. Now that it is warm outside the air stopped blowing out any air. The digital temperature on the climate control is not correct. When it states that it is below 30 degrees on the ext and it is warm outside the air wont be cold. Once it starts going above 30 degrees the air gets colder. Today the blower stop working all together. Was told it maybe the climate control unit was bad. You can hear the door opening/shutting when you switch the temp from cold to hot. But there was no heat blowing out whatsoever in the winter time. Could you please give me your opinion on whether or not it is the climate control unit or something else?

If your car has an air conditioner turn it on as well as the heater . Air conditioned air is very dry and usually defrosts the windscreen quickly. The heat from the heater will overcome the cold air from the air/con. It is good for the air/con to be run during the winter months as well as summer, it stops the seals drying out and leaking refrigerent.

Here's the way I usually approach problems such as this. First I'll hook up a scan tool that allows me to see the actual engine coolant temperature is [not just what the gauge says] as the vehicle is being driven down the road at highway speeds. The coolant should be near the 192 - 200 degree range to get the best heat out of the heater. If the coolant temp is below that level then the amount of heat you'll get will drop according. IF the coolant is reaching full temp but the air coming from the heater isn't very warm then you could have a restricted heater core or a temp control door in the ductwork that isn't working properly and is allowing cold air to sneak past the heater core. Usually if you have a water pump impeller problem you'll also have an overheating problem as the pump often isn't able to move enough water through the radiator to keep the engine cool. The snowflake appears when the outside temperature drops to 40 degrees or below, it then changes to red when it is 32 degrees and below. It seems the manufacturer thinks this will assist you with your driving habits on frozen roadways.

In cold weather my heating doesn't blow hot air


When your engine thermostat has failed or is sticking open, the engine fluid isn't able to reach a temperature that lets your heater core get hot enough to produce worthwhile heat to blow into the passenger's compartment. It is also not good for your engine to run below design temperature.
If you have a dashboard temp gauge, if your thermostat is stuck open, that gauge will probably stay in the cold area.
I would think that that is the problem, and I would have the thermostat changed (not a very difficult or expensive job).

My heat and air only works when I am driving down the interstate. If I slow down any, they quit working. The blower blows, but the air becomes the temperature of outside. Any idea?


It may be the valve that controls the amount of water entering heating core but I'm wondering if your engine thermostat isn't stuck open. This is what controls the coolant temperature in your engine. It closes off while engine is off. It will remain closed after you start your car until the water warms to a certain temperature then it starts to open enough to keep your car at the proper operating temperature. If it stick open then it will take a lot longer for the engine to heat up and on smaller cars might never heat up enough for your heater. If you live in very cold climates such as where I live in Wyoming, we have to change to a higher degree thermostat so we have a good heater when it's 30 below zero.

Be very cautious here but one way you can check this is to put a piece of cardboard in front of your radiator and stop the airflow that cools your engine coolant. THIS WILL CAUSE YOUR CAR TO HEAT UP AND CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE IF IT OVERHEATS. Don't completely cover the radiator but if your heater warms up when you put the cardboard in front of radiator it's a good sign that your thermostat is stuck open and needs to be replaced.
