if fuse and bulbs are fine then it's your reverse switch that's not working. it is located at the transmission, change it. but before changing you should make sure that the wires are not cut or faulty.
the fog light bulb in the 98 Grand Prix is easy pull pigtail off light turn light from back and it will come out , replace is reverse obviously , but make sure the orientation is correct on housing as there is one tab bigger than the other 2 have to look at it from underneath to see orientation of the bulb housing.
Sorry I have been out of town. I went to the library and borrowed the Chilton book. I already had it right, but the back light cover was just not being cooperative. After jiggling it a little more, it came off and I was able to change the bulb. I wish they had made it simpler like the old Camry _ where there wasn't so much difficulty getting at the bulbs.
mike... i have to start with the merely obvious.... have you check the bulbs are not burnt out. ?... next put it in reverse... and jiggle the shifter... does that make them come on ?.... if not leave it in reverse... motor off of course and parking brake on ... and test for voltage to each socket...... if none... have someone jiggle the shifter while you check for voltage... if there is still none... you have basically narrowed it down to the switch... the relay or the fuse.
More than likely they were not working before this. The reversing light switch sits on the front of the gearbox. After obviously checking the bulbs remove the plug from the switch ( it will only have two connections) and bridge the connections with a short piece if wire ( insulated so that no short occurs on gearbox casing) then switch ignition on. Lights will most likely be on. If thats the case replace the switch and take back what you said about the guy!! Cheers John
