How do i replace the back disc brakes on my 2001

I can't get the caliper off the disc in my 2001 Honda Accord 4 cyl. It almost seems that the axle is in the way. I can't even figure out how to loosen. Any suggestions?

There could be a rust buildup in the center surrounding your hub nut making look like the two are connected. Carefully chip the rust away from that area with a hammer and a flat-head screwdriver (wear glasses during). Also the rotor has phillips style retaining screws securing the disc to the hub. If you can't get them screws out I'll tell you what I do on my personal cars, but it's not so approved in the ASE world. I drill the screws out and leave 'em out because the wheel holds the rotor on with the lug nuts. REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS... Spray some lube in all the openings available on the old disc. You have to remove the bolts to move the brake caliper out of the way (don't open the brake line), just move it and rest it on something like a lower control arm, don't let it hang on a brake line alone. Remove the phillips disc retaining screws. Chip away any rust that is visually preventing removal. OPTION 1 is to insert two 12mm bolts in the threaded holes of the old disc and crank each one evenly until the disc shows signs of backing off (better not to use bolts from the car for this because they can break off in your old disc)... or OPTION 2: Hammer the heck out of it until it can be wiggled off. Rear brakes generally last twice as long as front brakes, this only means they get to sit on there longer and bond to the car as it ages... GOOD LUCK!!!

    Ahhh, I misread your question. You have to use a wrench at first with a hammer. Strike the wrench so that the bolt is going COUNTER CLOCKWISE. There are 2 on each caliper.

    Then you can sometimes finger twist them out of at this time it's safe to put a socket and extension on there.

    So many time a socket with extension is dangerous because it can slip off and send your hand into "stop until it hits something sharp" mode.

Trying to chance rear disc pads , can't make caliper plunger go back in w/ big c clamp


undo the bleed valve (nipple)when turning the clamp bolts,try not to allow any air back into the caliper when doing this,(two people are best doing this )

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Except 1990–95 Accord
  1. If equipped with an air bag, disconnect the negative battery cable and properly disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), as detailed in Section 6 of this manual.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts, then Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the two 6mm screws from the brake disc. Fig. 1: Remove the two 6mm screws securing the brake disc 86809029.jpg

  5. Disconnect the caliper from the caliper bracket. Support the caliper out of the way with a length of wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.

  7. Remove the brake disc. If the brake disc is difficult to remove, install two 8mm bolts into the threaded holes and tighten them evenly and alternately to prevent cocking the rotor. Fig. 3: Remove the brake disc from the caliper assembly 86809031.jpg

  8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  9. If equipped, enable the SRS system and connect the negative battery cable.
1990–95 Accord

  4. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Please refer to Section 8 for procedures.

    To install:
  7. Assemble the disc to the hub unit and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  8. When installing the hub to the knuckle, use new self-locking bolts and tighten them to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  9. Install the steering knuckle.
  10. Lower the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
  11. If equipped, enable the SRS system and connect the negative battery cable.

the piston thing is a brake caliper, remove the 2 bolts behind it then pull caliper off.tip''insert screwdriver in hole on caliper then pry back to compress caliper so you dont have to open bleeder valve when going back with new brakes,

How to remove a rear hub assembly bearing on a 99 honda accord 4 cly 2.3.

The rear wheel bearing and hub unit are replaced as a unit.
  1. With the vehicle on the ground, loosen the spindle nut.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4. Remove the brake disc retaining screws.
  5. Unbolt the brake hose brackets from the knuckle.
  6. Remove the caliper bracket mounting bolts and hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire.
  7. Remove the brake disc. If the disc is frozen on the hub, screw two 8 x 1.25mm bolts evenly into the disc to push it away from the hub.
  8. Remove the spindle nut and pull the hub unit off of the spindle.

Clean the backing plate and the mating surfaces of the brake disc and hub with brake cleaner. Clean the spindle, washer, and hub with solvent.
To install:
  1. Inspect the hub unit for signs of damage or wear. If the bearings are worn, the entire unit must be replaced.
  2. Install the hub unit and spindle washer onto the spindle. Install the spindle nut but do not tighten it.
  3. Install the brake disc and tighten the retaining screws to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Install the brake caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Install the brake hose brackets onto the knuckle and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  5. Install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  6. With the vehicle on the ground, tighten the new spindle nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), then stake the nut with a punch.
  7. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  8. Test the operation of the brakes.

ADJUSTMENT

The wheel bearings are not adjustable or repairable and should be replaced if found defective.

How do you take off the rotors on a 1990 honda accord


Actually, it’s a bit involved, but you can do it.
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel and install two lug nuts with 3mm washers under them to hold the disc in place (if the two disc retaining screws are still in place, this will be unnecessary)
Remove the brake caliper. It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose. After removing the caliper bolts, suspend the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket to steering knuckle bolts.
Remove the drive axle hub nut. To prevent the hub from turning, put a pry bar between two of the wheel studs and against the ground, then loosen the nut.
Remove the cotter pin and loosen the lower ball joint nut about three full turns. Don’t remove it. Separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle (you’ll need to get or rent a two-jaw puller for that).
Swing the knuckle/hub assembly out away from the car and push the drive axle through the hub assembly until the end of the drive axle is free of the hub. The shaft on the end of the drive axle is often hard to dislodge from the hub, so you may have to tap the outer end of the shaft with a soft mallet until it pulls easily out of the hub.
After the hub and axle are separated, support the outer end of the drive axle with a piece of wire to avoid unnecessary stain on the CV joint.
Remove the four bolts that hold the hub and brake disc assembly to the steering knuckle and remove the hub and disc.
Put a pry bar or something like one between two of the wheel studs to keep the whole thing from turning as you maybe put your feet against the bar, and then remove the four bolts that hold the disc to the hub assembly. Then you will have your disc. Installation is the reverse.

93 honda accord rotors


Your Accord has what is called "Trapped Rotors". They actually fit behind the hub. The procedure to remove them is not complicated, but it is time consuming.
Here is how I do it:
1) Remove axle retaining nut.
2) Remove brake caliper and bracket.
3) Remove lower ball joint retaining nut and use pickle fork to loosen spindle from lower ball joint.
4) Remove axle from hub.
5) On the back of the spindle, remove four bolts that attach hub/bearing to spindle.
6) Use slide hammer to remove rotor/hub assembly.
7) Remove 4 bolts attaching rotor to hub.
8) While it is a snug fit, the hub bearing does slide through center of rotor to remove it.
Installation is in reverse order.
A bad bearing usually makes a growling noise while driving.
