My car has been sitting for 9 months. It has not even been turned on. About 2 months ago my husband decided to try to start it but said the battery was dead, as it would not turn over and the car's interior light didn't even come on when he opened the door. I am going to get it jump started this week (or next) and want to know if there is anything I should do before that or at the same time, considering that it has not been run at all in 9 months. Also, is there any special treatment or things I should do after I get it started? One more thing, a friend of mine said my tires might have rotted since they haven't moved in almost a year - how do I know if that is the case? It is a 2000 Honda Civic and has been parked in our garage, gathering a nice layer of dust and dog hair.

The battery should be put on a low trickle charge over night and let sit then have it load tested. Make sure to check all your fluid levels before starting and put some fresh gas in the tank. as for the tires you can just look at them and determine that you see tiny little cracks

Why is this happening

Before you go any further, have the battery checked. If there is an internal problem, it will create all kinds of problems like this.

Sounds like you have bad gas. Gas goes bad after a couple months of sitting. I've gone through plenty of other options when trying to figure out this same problem, and it turned out to be the easiest problem of having old gas. Try running fresh gas straight into the fuel pump and see if it turns over then.

It might be your anti-theft alarm system. When the car doesn't start, is there a ticking sound inside the car? If so, hit the unlock button a few times on your keyless entry remote, until the ticking stops, then try to start the car. Hopefully this helps.

Try charging the battery first. Hook up to another vehicle and let them sit connected for about 10 minutes. Afterwards, then try starting it. If that makes any difference at all...keep charging. If theres no difference, replace the battery.

Have a 1996 Taurus wagon--dead battery--got brand new battery and connected it properly and car barely turns over and wont turn enough to start--car was sitting for about three months

Was the battery checked before it was sold to you? Batteries will lose their charge over a period of time even when not hooked up. If you have a voltmeter it should read 12.8 volts on a fully charged battery.
Have you tried to boost the car with cables?
I suspect if the car was working OK 3 months ago it should start. Which leads me to suggest an undercharged battery.

When we turn key car is dead. Car has been sitting for 2 months.

replace your battery, a battery discharges every day you dont run the alt. to charge it up... after a week or 2 weeks the battery would be dead, just from a car sitting not being started... if you are not using the vehicle, it is a good thing to replace the battery, and every couple days just start the car up and let it run a while to charge the battery.... if you are going to have to leave the car for a while without starting it, then disconnect the battery, and remove it from the vehicle... you can buy a cheap trickel charger for the battery when it is out that will keep it charged till you decide to put it back in.... hope this helps you...

Chrysler sebring wont start at all

Does it have a distributor??? If it does, take it off and spary the inside of the cap with WD-40. It sounds like you have moisture built up in the cap from just sitting there. You might also need to put a battry charger on the battery to bring it back up to fully charged. Cold weather sometimes play a tole on cars sitting around, especially Batterys.

Cutlass supreme wont start

It could possibly be the starter, but before you get that far make sure the Battery cables are connected very tight. If loose the car won't start or do anything. Also make sure the battery cable is grounded.
