That should be the 2.2 liter. If it is...It has gears, and the only issue I know of is that the cam gear is made of a composite material and I have seen them chew up teeth, but usually due to a bad mis-fire problem. Normally they are fine.

Does the cavalier Z24 v6 3.1 have a plastic cam gear if so what happens if it breaks due to timing chain wear?

As far as I am aware, no vehicles use plastic or nylon for cam sprockets. They are steel with a chain, or aluminium with a toothed belt. Vehicles have a recommended service period for belts and chains.

The ticking is hydraulic valve lifters which are self adjusting.

Does a 2005 cavalier have a timing belt or chain 2.2 and when do I change it?

This 2.2 Liter engine uses a Timing chain, timing chains are never replaced unless the engine is being overhauled, there is no periodic replacement required like a Timing belt. Engines that use chains are much more durable than those that use belts and last longer per dollar spent on maintenance costs. I wish I had a dollar for every ruined engine due to a failed rubber timing belt.

I have 103,500 miles on my 2002 nissan sentra when should I change the timing chain

The timing chain doesn't really have a maintenance period. They don't have a habit of breaking or stretching. Timing belts on some vehicles do have a recomended replacement period. Locate your local NTB, Firestone, or Sears for the maintenance schedule.

No, timing chains are not expected to be replaced periodically like belts. Ocassionally they get noisey at high mileages and require a new tensioner pad but usually the chain is OK with a new pad
