Something is wrong. What does the steam smell like? Oil or antifreeze?
Look closely for coolant seeping onto something hot and vaporizing, if that's what you smell.
Check your coolant level and oil to verify if you may have a leak.

What is cause of temperature gauge indicating overheating and steam coming from engine and coolant leaking?

First off you are going to need a engine or a full rebuild if the temp gauge redlined.. The cause could be numerous things but if it was steaming from the back of the motor then it's either heater core hose busted or blown freeze plug.

Driving and clicking sound then smoke

When you say smoke, could it have been steam? It is hard to say what the clicking sound was if you had never noticed anything like that before, but it seems the car maybe was out of coolant. This may have occurred if the radiator cap came loose. What did the temp gauge show at the time?

1996 jeep Cherokee country 130k miles recently had oil filter changed and broke the oil sensor gauge...had them replace gauge sensor causing the new filter to be reinstalled. Several weeks later after two...

There is either A).an oil leak or B). the smoke is from residue oil spilled on exhaust and such during the repair. Crank the engine and look everywhere for an evident oil leak if one is not found leave it run till it gets hot enough to show where the white smoke is coming from and see then if it is residue or a new leak. Replaced thermostat on pontiac sunfire now there's smoke coming from coolant tank

Sounds like you have a leaking head gasket or damage to the engine from when it overheated.
A leaking head gasket can cause compression to leak into the cooling system and pull coolant into the cylinders which is burned out the exhaust. It does not have to leak into the oil.
A shop would check for exhaust gas in the cooling system and run a compression test on the cylinders.

My s 430 has smoke coming from under hood after driving but not all the time temp gauage reads normal. I had oil and trans leaks sealed but it is still happening, what else could it be? Thanks

SMOKE UNDER HOOD COULD BE COOLANT LEAK FROM RADIATOR ITSELF OR CHECK FOR LEAKING TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND CHECK FOR LEAKING BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.LOOK UNDER THE HOOD IF COOLANT BOILING OUT COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG ENGINE OVERHEATING FROM BAD THERMOSTAT OR BAD WATER PUMP.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAK AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE.IF SO WATER PUMP NEED REPLACING.ADD MORE COOLANT UNTIL LEVEL CORRECT.TRY LOCATE LEAK. IF CAR OVERHEATED AND BOILED IT OUT. SMOKE UNDER THE HOOD CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY LEAKING VALVE COVERS WHICH CAN BE FIRE HAZARD IF OIL LEAKS ON HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD.

Thermostat needle climbs pretty quickly and then the alarm signals to shut engine off, but there is no smoke, no check engine light

Have you recently changed the thermostat,if so there is air in the cooling system and needs to be bled out, water will not be in contact with the temp gauge, the reading it is getting is from steam.if not,it may be time to change the thermostat.

you have 4 water lines, they are 2 radiator hoses (top and bottom) the bottom one runs from the lower part of the radiator to the water pump, the top radiator hose runs from the upper part of the radiator to the thermostat housing

2 heater hoses, they go from the water pump to the firewall.

if you know which one has a hole then you should take the van to a parts store (if you can safely drive it that far) and show them, they can get the right one for you... and sometimes you can talk someone into putting it on for you.

as for the fluctuating gauges you probably need new sending units for the temp gauge and fuel gauge
