Question about 1999 Ford Contour
Easy one here... yes the computer needs to relearn it's idle settings...
First, disconnect the battery and let it sit for at least 20 minutes...
Then, reconnect it and start the car...
WHEN you start it, DON'T touch the gas pedal, brake, or anything else. Let it idle for approx. 20 minutes in park. Let it warm up, and relearn it's optimum settings. Right now, it sounds like it's idleing too slow and when you shift it into gear, it stalls...
After this, it will take approx. 50 to 100 miles to relearn it's best running settings again in all rpm and load ranges...
Run the car with and without the A/C, lights on, lights off, etc...
Just give it time to reset itself...
Also, check your vac lines to make sure you have them all connected. And ALSO, check your engine grounding straps. If you removed one and didn't reattach it, the computer is now without the proper ground refernece for it's signals coming from all of it's sensors.... it will run like ****... idle ok, but run like ****...

Did you have the battery checked also? did you reconnect all wires to the alternator? sometimes there is an electrical connector that plugs into the alternator. If this is unplugged in the alternator will not charge the battery and car will die once battery is dead.
