Question about 2001 Ford Escort ZX2

Car stalling out

New timing belt & pulleys installed a new sensor & serpentine belt installed,car runs good but stalls out when car is idling.Any answers ?Had tune up done recently,new spark plugs etc.

I just went through this. It's your Idle Air Control Valve probably going out. It's next to the throttle body right on top. Two bolts and a wire. Be sure to unplug negative side of battery before changing to get rid of that pesky check engine light! best of luck!

Replaced the serpentine belt but now car won't start


A serpentine belt almost never breaks unless one thing happens---one of the accessories seizes and won't turn.Remove the belt and see which pulley won't turn.The serpentine belt is strong enough to keep the engine from cranking up(better grip on the pulleys compared to the old V-belts).I actually remember a tech 3 stalls down from me sell a customer an engine,only to find the alternator was just seized.(embarassing!)Any one accessory bearing will keep it from cranking up,and I'm sure you'll find it quickly after removing the belt.

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.


Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Rotate the auto tensioner clockwise to release tension, then remove the drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install drive belt (A). Route the belt over the components in the following order: Crankshaft pulley - A/C pulley - idler pulley - generator pulley - water pump pulley - P/S pump pulley - tensioner pulley.
  2. Rotate auto tensioner arm in the counter-clockwise moving auto tensioner pulley bolt with wrench.
  3. After putting belt on auto tensioner pulley, release the auto tensioner pulley slowly.

Installed new head gasket, new timing belt, two new valves. drove 5 miles engine stalled. no spark or injector pulse. installed new crank sensor, cam sensor, coilpack, new ECM still wont start


It soundslike your timing belt may have a problem. It may have failed prematurely, thetensioner may have failed, the tensioner pulley or idler pulley may have wornout, or the timing may be incorrectly set. No spark can usually be guaranteed acrank sensor fault, cam sensor fault, or timing fault. If the timing checksout, maybe you got a bad crank sensor or cam sensor, but I am 98% sure it'srelated to timing.

Van stalled while I was driving. I was able to restart it after a few minutes and drive a short distance before it stalled again. I had it in the shop for a squealing noise and the mechanic replaced power...


i would bring it back and make sure they didn't leave anything disconnected. there's not much as far as dirvablility stalling issues found on the belt side of the engine but anything is possible. It also sounds like you could have a fuel pump issue or a crank or cam sensor problem.

For sure the timing is out, these cars are a mess to work on. Bring the car to someone who knows what he is doing. Good luck with that.

Engine stalls when put into gear. Idles rough & rich.


IT COULD BE THE POWER STEERING PUMP LOCKING UP AND STALLING THE ENGINE. CHECK TO SEE WHICH ONE OF THE PULLEYS IS NOT MOVING AS FAST AS THE OTHERS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE MOTOR.(WHILE IT'S RUNNING) IT COULD JUST BE AN IDLER PULLEY. I HOPE THIS HELPS TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE BELT FAILURE. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND FOR AN HONEST RATING. GOOD LUCK

Serpentine belt slipped off due to anti-freeze.


Probably wet electrical components. Use an air hose to blow everything off , and let it dry good before you try it. Or, the mass air flow sensor could be dead.
