The coolent temprature sensor for the gauge is located in the thermostat housing, the one for the ECM is on top of the intake manifold on the foward end near the thermostat housing.

Coolant Temperature Sender TESTING a coolant temperature sensor: Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Refer to the appropriate chart for your engine. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sender. Fig. 1: Coolant temperature sender chart — gasoline engines 89552g87.gif

What controls the temperature gauge on a 1990 ford f150 5.0 engine and where is it located

The temp gauge on the dash displays the information transmitted by the coolant temperature sensor. This sensor is located - on the engine - by the water neck. The water neck is where the top radiator hose comes across and connects to the radiator. This sensor can look like the one here:

Hope this helps.

What controls the temperature gauge on a 1990ford

ECT sensor controls the computer, engine coolant temperature sender controls the gauge. 5.0? 5.8? 4.9? Then I can tell you where it is.

Most likely the coolant temperature sensor for the vehicle computer. Secondly, could be the tps sensor "throttle position sensor" not registering correctly or perhaps lots of other things but most likely the coolant temp sensor.
