Gas leak in 2006 Saturn Ion

I have been having starting problems with my car (2006 Saturn Ion) and smelling gasoline. It turns out the hose connected to the fuel pump was cracked and leaking gas. The mechanic said that this is a safety issue and should be recalled. He feels that the one hose is not connected and harnessed properly and the vibration to the hose eventually caused the crack. I googled "Saturn 2006 Ion fuel leak" and several other people have had the same issue. What is also the major problem here is that the hose is configured with the fuel pump itself. So, the entire mechanism had to be replaced. It cost me 700.00 for a cracked hose because the fuel pump had to be replaced and my car only is 46,000 miles. This is a major safety issue. I drove for 2 weeks with a car that was leaking fuel. Saturn must know about this and is waiting for the same situtation to happen, but for the car to blow up instead. PLEASE IF YOU ARE READING THIS CAUSE YOU HAVE THE SAME ISSUE . . . . contact the office of defects and the NHTSA . . .This is a saftey issue and a recall needs to be in affect . . .

I looked more into this and found a posting for Oct. 29, 2009 for a recall similar to what you have discussed. I'm not sure if they will post the link so here are the phone #'s listed, contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, saturn at 1-800-972-8876. Maybe you can get your money back.

Yes...Thank U so much Johnny H. for your posting
I just (10/23/09) replaced my fuel pump too. Two separate Cert Auto-Tech looked at it and were shocked that my ION 2006 with 52,000 mile on it, had such a BAD fuel leak. Extremely financially challenge. So had a Auto-Tech in-training drop the tank & yup.. hose configuration with the fuel pump cracked & whole thing needed to be replace.

Thank you soooo much Johnny for your posting... I am going to contact them right away... sounds like we had the EXACT same problem... and I, too, was driving around for about that long with leaking gas... It's NUTS!!

If we all write Saturn... I wonder if anything would happen... especially now that there won't be Saturn anymore...

But... wanted to write and say THANK YOU for your response!!!

Much aloha,
Loree

This should be a recall in every state. I registered my 2006 Saturn ION in NH and this recall link only says cars sold or registered in Arizona, California, Texas, Florida and Nevada. There should be a class action law suit. I am angry.

Update: I took the car in to the Banks Chevrolet and they replaced the fuel pump module to fix the problem. The part was 304.00 and the labor was approximately 110.00 making it a 414.00 repair. I called Saturn for financial assistance for at least partial reimbursement for the repair and they screwed me completely. This should be a class action suit or some kind of legal action.

The fuel pump module should be one of those parts to last the life of the car and if it doesn't it is either because it is defective or your car got shot at.

What does a Saturn ion gasoline look like

It's leaking gas, you have a leaky fuel tank or broken seal or fuel line.

2006 saturn ion .car started idling really rough and had no power. Almost stalled out. Had it tested and it said small vacuum leak and misfire. So I replaced the gas cap with an OEM cap and it is still...

Not to sound rude, but when it says "vacuum leak", it means from the intake manifold. Get a can or two of Ether, and start the engine. Have someone run it at a steady RPM. Spray the ether around the manifold, and any hoses under the hood, until you hear the engine rev up. Spray along said section until you find the issue. Replace the offending part. As for the misfire, this should cure that, and if not, try simple things, IE, spark plug replacement, etc.

Smells like gasoline

Hi,
Sounds like you have a leak somewhere.
Could either be on one of the fuel lines / unions or on the tank.
The fact that you had just filled it up makes me think that it is probably on the tank or filler line.
Have a good look around in these areas to see if you can locate where it is coming from and take it from there.
Hope this helps.

Strong gas smell when engine is turned off.Car runs smoothly otherwise. Started doing this abruptly. Of course milage is now suffering

Hi,
This sounds like a problem with the "Emissions control system"
Designed to absorb fuel vapours - and release them when engine running, When they go wrong it leads to excessive fuel consumption, fuel smells and possibly leaks.

It is most likely a split pipe along this system - which needs checking carefully to find out where exactly.
Overfilling of your tank can lead to pressure problems - popping off a hose, so if you remember doing this - check any carbon filter element and hoses around it.

Saturn ion fuel pump

Misnikie32 . .. I just had the same problem around the time you figured out your problem and I just got it fixed yesterday. For almost 3 weeks I had starting problems and I constantly smelled gas. The problem is a safety issue and the car needs to be recalled. The hose that is connected to the fuel pump is cracked. Since the hose is incorporated with the fuel pump, the entire mechanism needs to be changed. Look at spending about 700.00 . I informed saturn and told them my life was at danger. Please contact them on their website and goto your state's attorney general and launch a complaint, as well as the office of defective investigations and the NTSAB (google them). This needs to be brought to their attention and all owners of this car. I googled this and many other people are having this problem. Some are even on this forum. PLEASE DO THIS ! ! ! !

Gasoline smell in air vents

A gasoline smell is from a leaking hose and you need to find that fast
You could have damaged a gas line during your repair work.
Get your money back on the damper repair. There are no gas dampers on autos.
