1998 gmc 1500 5.7L shifter sticks (auto transmission. ) its a bugger to get out of park, i was thinking the brake sensor (disconected the shifter cable at the tranny)then it shifts fine, and can shift fine...

Shift interlock system problem . Not the cable . Your vehicle has a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved from park without the brake pedal pushed . Lock solenoid keeps gear selector from moving . Trying to force it will break something . Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a volt meter ? Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
Enter the vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on transmission / transaxle , then under subsystem click on shift interlock . Click the search button then the blue link. Park neutral switch , brake switch and the shift interlock solenoid , check electrical circuits .

My 92 honda was stuck in low (1st) gear. D4 light stayed on even when in other gears. Car did not throw any codes. Also the door open and truck open indicator lights would all stay lit.

It sounds like you have a Bad Shift Solenoid that is shorting out, Cleaning the Solenoid probably moved the "WIRE" and then when reinstalled, worked it way back. If the Shorting of the Shift Solenoid causes the issue with the PCM/TCM, then either your PCM did not have an issue or the Solenoid just took out your new PCM due to not repairing the issue the first time. I personally would start out with changing the Solenoids (ALL OF THEM) and Un-Plugging the PCM while doing the repair. This will do a reset for you.

Gear shifter will not go into gear and cannot release from park. Car was parked on level ground. After returing to the car and turning the ignition on, the gear shifter would not go into any gear. Car was...

Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator mounted at the base of the steering column or on the floor shifter mechanism. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is ON unless the brake pedal is depressed.

What gear to drive in D-4 or D-5? a lincoln Ls

D5. This will use all 5 gears. D4 will not shift into 5th (overdrive). This causes higher revs on the highway, more noise and less fuel mileage. D4 is only really used when going down long hills for better engine braking. Leave it in d5 and let the cars computer do the shifting for you.

if this car is an automatic, you are probably hearing the shift interlock switch that prevents you from putting the car in gear without applying the brakes.
