How do you remove the steering 1998 Dodge Ram column so you can

How do you remove the steering column so you can remove the dash to change a heater core? All of the steering column wiring is disconnected and so is the shifter indicator wire. The two nut/stud nuts are off that holds the steering column shaft to the dash frame are off too. It was my understanding from a Chilton’s manual that this should now slip off letting you keep all of the linkages and connections on the engine side of the firewall stay intact.

Likely, you could leave it right there and work around it but if you want it out, there should be a coupler on the shaft to remove the top half. Don't know which coupler style you have but most have either a through bolt retainer or a roll pin that is driven out. If the coupler is under the dash, column will then come out, if on firewall side you may need to remove the cover bolts on the firewall.

Need to loosen dash away from truck without taking all the way out, trying to reach heater core. 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

One bolt on each side under the kick panel few bolts in the middle under the cover to remove a bracket and remove all the bolts on the top by the windshield. Those are the main bolts that hold the dash. You will also have to drop the steering column down by removing the two nuts on it and a bracket underneath that. you will have to take the dash cluster and other electronics out and unhook some wires to get the dash out far enough. Just did one a wee age in a 2001 Ram Good luck

Im trying to change a heater core in my 1998 dodge ram 1500. how do i get the dash out?

hi.. if you have not removed a dash before then i suggest you get a mechanic to do it because its a nightmare... i have not removed the dash from a ram but i have from smaller cars, usualy you just start at the head unit and steering collums removing every bit of trimm possible which will reveal bolts and screws, there may also be bolts located on the engine side of the firewall and in the section where the wiper motor is located, also you may need to remove the steering collumn or the wheel, beware of airbags and do not turn the collumn more than a rotation while it is disconected, there are all sorts of expencive switches that can be dammaged.. apart from that you should organise all your clips and bolts well because it is a huge job and may take you a couple of days.

I need to know how to replace a heater core in a 1998 dodge ram

these ar not fun at all. you have to undo the steering column and shaft so the entire unit lays down on the driver seat, then remove all screw bolts or nuts that fasten the dash to the firewall, then slide the dash backwards toward back of truck obviously and you then can get at the black box the heater core is mounted inside of.you will have to then undo the screws on the cover of this bow, take you jeater hoses off from under hood, then remove heater core. the whole job will takeabout 5 hours with good experience, maybe around 8 with little or no experience. I recomend buying a Haines or Chilton manual to follow if you do this your self. the job really isn't hard, just time consuming, and a few tight places to get into.

Heater core

You have to pull the dash almost out to replace the heater core. first drain the coolant and remove the heater hoses in the engine compartment. Next lower the steering column. there are 4-5 8mm screws onthe top of the dash, and tw 13mmbolts on the sides remove the kick panels to see them. Also remove the airbag module on the tranny hump under the dash.when all is unfastened you can pull the dash back on the passengers side back and almost put it on the seat. you will see the heater core on the top of the heater box. Discharge the ac and remove the heater box fasteners in the engine compartment . pull the box down inthe cab of the truck r&r core. sound worse thatn it really is good luck
