My service engine soon light just came on while driving, this is a week after picking my car up after getting some wires and the battery replaced. Will I still be able to drive because this is my only means of transportation right now.

Yes, if the car was safe before the service engine light came on, it is the same.
Generally, the light indicates some emission or sensor problem, not critical engine/safety failure.
There are other indicators for that, such as ABS, Oil, Brake, Airbag, Battery (alternator) meters or red lights.

Take the car to AutoZone to have them analyze the PCM code (free). Ask for a print-out with an explanation (also free). Have them resaet the PCM code light (yes, free).
Let us know what codes were extracted and a summary of the printout.
We will present possible solutions for you to consider. (free).

Yes, you can still drive it. Just get the engine light check out as soon as you can. Most auto-parts stores will scan your computer in the car for free. They will give you the trouble code and tell you what it means.

I replaced the alternator on my 1999 Audi A6 with 2.8 engine. Now the check engine light is on. Was not on prior to the repairn. How do I correct?

Instructions on How to Turn Off The Check Engine Light:
Step 1. If not using a scan tool, locate your vehicle's battery. Disconnect the 12v positive cable (red wire) from battery terminal (+). Leave it disconnect for 5 minutes. While the battery is disconnected, cycle the ignition switch to ON position 3 times. If using a scan tool to turn off the check engine light, follow manufacturers directions. You will need to find your vehicle's OBD II Data Link Connecter (DLC) and connect your scan tool to the DLC, then follow the steps indicated on your scan tool or scan tool manual.

Step 2. Insure ignition switch is OFF. Reconnect the battery 12v positive cable (red wire) to battery terminal (+).

Step 3. Cycle ignition switch to ON position and wait 1 minute, then start your vehicle. Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light should be reset and turned OFF.

Step 4. Drive your vehicle for one week under normal driving conditions. During this period the emissions computer is gathering data and re-learning your vehicle's emissions components and systems. The emissions computer OBDII (on-board diagnostics) system must complete at least one drive cycle (in some cases two or three). A drive cycle is a sequence of internal tests which the emissions computer runs while your vehicle is being driven. This insures all emissions systems are functioning properly. Proper "readiness flags" are set as the computer completes it's cycles. Test cycles are unique to a vehicle. Certain cycles run under very strict parameters, and may require extended driving time to trigger on. Cycle data and readiness flag information is available through your dealership's service department. The data vary widely.

I have a 1999 Mercury tracer. I was driving down the highway two weeks ago and my check engine light came on. i went to autozone and he said something about misfire on bank and vacuum leak. He said it bascially was a tune up. i got in my car the next day and the light went off. it didnt come back on. Last sunday i got a tune up and a oil change. i was driving to work today when my service engine soon light came back on. could it be because its been warm here in st louis and all of a sudden its cold. or do i just need to get it reset. i hope its nothing major because im broke right now and cant afford to get it fixed

usually when the check engine light is flashing it indicates that you need to tune it up. I would replace the plugs and wires. Do it one at a time so you don't forget firing order. Leave comment
