Need more information. Is it push button 4 wheel? Could be a vacuum line then. Try and rock the vehical back and forth forward to reverse and back a few times. Some owners manuals say to do this to engage 4 wheel drive. SOmetimes takes a bit to get the gears to mesh.

The 4 wheel drive shifter just glides back and forth and doesn't engage. What could cause this?

You need to get under the vehicle and check the linkages where the lever attaches, you will find loose or broken linkages under there.

It started with pulling 4 wheel drive lever to engage 4 wheel drive. It would take couple of seconds to engage. Finally engage light would appear showing engage. The light would blink a few times before...

Check the linkage under the vehicle that goes from your shift lever to a rod that then goes to the transmission lever. Sometimes a coupling will come loose. Simple return it to its' original position and re-tighten. Let me know if this helps. Thanks.

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.
