Oh i get it, the starter is at the bottom rear of the engine where it mates to the transmission bell housing, u must get under the truck to see it, it is no the drivers side i believe.

well it is nearly 30 and has to be one of the few left around. were it mine i would check for vacuum leaks and think about a new distributor.

when it doesnt start tap the solenoid on the starter while turning key. if this works the starter solenoid is bad. does the starter make a grinding /clinking noise when starting?

Starter Bendix solenoid. Change entire starter. If planing to keep car long time buy a lifetime warranty one.
