How to adjust the brake drum of ford escape 2002

all you do is adjust the brake adjuster while turning the drum until you begin to feel resistance of the drum turning. do not over adjust until you have to use too much effort to turn the drum. make sure both drums have similar resistance.

Drums 2002 ford escape

1) Make sure your parking brake isn't on (I've made that mistake),
and
2) Use a RUBBER MALLET to pound lightly on the outside of the drum to free it. Especially if your brake shoes are worn all the way down, it is likely that there is a ridge (a lip) on the inside surface of your brake drum. If this is the case, REPLACE THE BRAKE DRUMS WITH NEW. Check eBay for parts first, as you can often find new brake drums there cheaply.

2001 ford escape focus xls 4cyl 4WD WHEELS LOCKED!

My guess is that the brakes are jammed cause of humidity and rust from being sitting without moving for 6 months. I've seen pretty bad cases of this where a 3 foot bar was needed to unjam the brakes. Good way to test real fast if this is the case is to jack the car up with a floor jack to get a tire off the ground, and then try to spin it by hand with the brakes off, handbrake down and vehicle in neutral. The differentials should allow one wheel to spin freely, if it does not then probably the brakes are jammed like i said. If you want to be sure it really is the brakes, just take off the caliper and pads. Once they are removed the wheel will spin normally and you will see the rust spot where the pads were. Keep in mind though that most rear wheel brakes are drums and not discs, so they don't have calipers and can't check them easily. Only take appart drum brakes if you have done this before and know what you are doing, cause in some cases you need special tools or procedures to take off the drum, and the linings inside have alot of springs and hardware that need to be placed exactly or else the vehicle won't brake normally from the rear.

I don't know how to take them off, but they are definitely drums. I have them too. It can be done really reasonably at Just Brakes or Midas. I take mine to Just Brakes.

How to remove rear brake drums on 2002 frod escape

Behind the brake mounting plate there is a small hole with a rubber plug on the top portion.

Remove the plug. Look from the back of the vehicle and you will see a star wheel in the hole. Stick

a long skinny screw driver with a large blade and rotate it in the direction of risistance.(clockwise).

You will hear a spring poping noise. Rotate a few times and the drums will turn freely.

Then you can slide the drums off.
