Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Will not idle when cold and rear differential problem

I have two issues right now. It has started to get cold and when i start the engine, it will not idle without dieing unless I keep the accelerator pushed down a little bit. Would changing the plugs, wires, rotor and dist. cap solve this problem?
And, I have a loud clunking noise in the rear end if I go over 55mph and let off the accelerator. Is this the rear differential going bad? If so, can it be repaired or do i have to replace the entire unit?

Thanks.

Running problem is likely related to manifold air temp sensor, throttle position sensor, map sensor or malfunctioning or dirty idle air control valve. If the plugs, wires and cap etc are old, it won't hurt to replace them but that may not cure the problem. There are tests you can do to above items listed in chiltons and haynes as well as many other manuals. you will need a multi meter to do tests.
The noise in the rear can be from the gearset, but before going there, check the driveshaft universal joints for play or rust. this needs to be done with the vehicle on flat ground, wheels blocked, in neutral. If diff turns out to be the problem, it can be rebuilt, but must be done by an expert or it will quickly fail again. Labor and parts are expensive. It is generally faster and easier to put a used diff in. Only thing that is essential is that the gear count at the ring and pinion are an exact match to what you have or it will cause the transfer case to fail.

2004 buick rendezvous cold start dies in winter

Hi Al, I'm glad to help!

Al, sense I'm not there to actually do diagnostics on your problem, I'll just tell you what I have found most of the time with your dyeing issue. Being in the automotive field for over 40 years I have mostly found a cold start dyeing issue to be the "IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR" because what it does is idles the engine up during cold starts and also when there is a load applied to the engine like when the A/C compressor turns on. This is where I would start. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Al.

I have a 4x4 89 s-10 4.3 v6 fuel injection. When I start my truck it idles high. After 30 to 50 seconds the idle goes back to normal. If I put in in reverse or drive when idle is high my back tires spin...

Sounds like the rear pads are worn out, your front brakes are keeping the truck from rolling. You need to have the high rpm checked for that 30-50 seconds as it is called the "cold start routine" and is meant to rev the engine for that time period. There may be an adjustment to keep it from over revving, check the specs for the rpm.

Even if you fix the rear brakes, the stress on the U-joints and differential or transmission is needless and can be fixed by limiting the high rpm in the "cold start cycle".

Cold Start Idle Issue

Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.
