If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.

A solid light can mean anything.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain off. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially go

You'll have to have the vehicle "scanned" to see what trouble code is turning the light on. It could be any number of things and you may not notice a drop in performance but there could be something wrong which could cause further damage ie catalytic converter damage. Alot of auto parts stores and repair facilities will scan the vehicle for free or a nominal charge.

Got to an auto parts store like Schuck's/Kragen/NAPA etc, and have them read the codes that are making your check engine light come on. It is free and they can do it for you.

My check engine and check fuel cap light keep coming on after i changed the gas cap twice and reset the light it came back on what could this be. I drive a 06 lincoln navigator

You need to diagnose any codes you get
& smoke test the evap system, to find a
problem

Seldom does throwing on parts with a name similar
to a code work

Codes have nothing to do with installing parts

Clearing codes, clears all data needed to diagnose
the failed system & the evap system only runs every few
days,so you done as far as codes helping

My check engine light comes on? What could it be? It stays on steady. Could it be a faulty gas cap. The car runs fine.

a faulty gas cap could cause an engine code to come on with-out and engine problems if you have to do emission tests or smog tests where you live the one thing there to check it that the gas cap is operating properly. but it could also be a sensor when the engine light comes on the car operates in what is called open loop mode the engine runs in preset peramiters set in the ECM it also runs in this mode til the vehicle is at operating temperator so even if the vehicle seems to be running ok the engine light isn't something that sould go unchecked

Our service engine light just came on.

The light means several different things Did she just purchase gas? Sometimes if the gas cap was not tighten properly it will cause the service engine light to come on. Usually you can drive the car until you have it checked out especially if the car seems to be running ok.

Engine check light comes on and stays on for awhile then goes off. Dometimes when I fill the gas tank the check engine light comes on. is something to do with the gas cap or the instrument lights.

IF IT COME ON EVERY TIME YOU GET GAS.GAS CAP HAS BAD SEAL IT MORE LIKELY YOUR PROBLEM BUT LET AUTO ZONE SCAN IT FREE TO SEE WHAT TROUBLE CODE YOU ARE GETTING.

Check engine light is on, but the car seems to be

The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that the car's ECM has registered a problem. It then stores a code in it's memory that can then be "pulled" by a hand held diagnostic trouble code reader and usually the issue an be corrected. More times than not, the car will seem to be running fine even with the light on because the ECM will compensate for the problem as much as it can to keep the system functioning. One thing you can do is remove the gas cap and put it back on making sure that you securely tighten it until you hear 3 clicks. After driving the car for 30-50 miles, the light may go out. If it does then the gas cap was not tightened completely causing air to enter the system (the system utilizes vacuum so it must be sealed air tight). If the light stays on, take it to a Dealer or trusted mechanic for further inspection. ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS TIGHTLY SECURED AFTER EVERY FILL UP OR THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN>

The dash panel on my car keeps telling me to tighten my gas cap,

Assuming you mean the gas cap being replaced, this can also be the result of a vacuum leak. Look around on the engine and see if there are any vacuum hoses related to the fuel system. If your engine has a plastic cover it is under that. Remove the cover. Most are held down by the oil fill tube which generally unscrews, sometimes reverse threaded.

2004 Pontiac Bonneville Check Engine Light

do you fill the gas tank with the key on?

Try disconnecting the battery for 1/2 hour an then reconnect and drive for 10 miles. It may run rough for this period. This will clear codes from memory.

Check Engine light keeps coming on and staying on

hi there, this is not uncommon, you see the gas cap is probably on properly, just check the gasket it might be cracked, pinched or warped, and every so often it might leak
