The max factory spec is about 1000 miles per quart, this all depends on speed you are going and outside air temp, engines use more oil at high speed and or high temps.

How much oil should normally be burnt on a Peugeot 207. 2007. 1.6 L auto. 5 door hatch if motor is in very good cond between oil changes (have done approx. 5000kms)

Anon, You really should look in your manual or contact manufacturer to find what is considered normal oil consumption. I have never owned a Peugeot, but have had numerous other makes, mostly domestics to USA and Canada and never had to add oil between changes at approx. 5000 Km.s before oil changes.

Loss of engine power and excessive oil consumption

You had the codes read out at a local parts place? Most will do it free.
Oil has to be going some place. If it's not on the road, then I would certainly expect smoke. The performance may have nothing to do with the oil consumption, you should not assume they're connected. I had similar oil loss, turned out to be a leak in the oil filter, only leaked when on the road, not in my garage.

Is it normal for my 2013 subaru xv crosstrek to have excessive oil consumption?

Yes that is normal, Subaru failed to tell customers of the oil consumption, if you go to your Subaru dealer they will fill oil to level & tell you to come back in 1200 miles time, they use 1quart every 1200 miles

I have a volkswagon 2008 Eos and have been told by the dealer it is normal for it to use oil. Now I hear a knock coming from the exaust. It has 65000 miles on it just out of warranty.

oil consumption of say 1/2 litre in 5.000miles would be normal even 1 litre in 5.000miles would be ok but any thing else is staring to be excessive. Oil consumption is an indication of a problem with the oil control rings and valve stem seals . Add to that your statement of a knock coming from the exhaust I would be inclined to have a compression test done to determine the condition of the engine . I consider 65.000 miles to be a little young for bad oil consumption so with the noise I would suspect a broken ring and a scored bore

Oil consumption is normal on these v6 engines (is that what you have?), expect one quart per 1,000 miles more or less. Keep an eye on it, keep it full,

2003 Passat GLX V6 4motion with 194K km. Requires 1L of oil every 4-5000 km. Is this normal?

That consumption is great, no worries.
Most healthy cars will consume a quart in 2,400 to 3,00 KM.

Car manufacturers will not repair and consider a quart in 965 km to be normal, I would be livid at that consumption.

If consumption gets too much, consider a high mileage blend, like Casteroil. It is a semi synthetic, and actually does lower consumption.

There is actually nothing that you could do to lower your consumption, but keep everything clean and maintained.

Thinking of buying an a4 tdi 1.9 diesel - seller says it smokes (grey) under heavy acceleration. Should I avoid it? Or is it livable wth (200k mileage)

grey smoke on acceleration is NORMAL for this engine, white or black avoid like the plague.....you could use an injector cleaner,redexe/wynns or similar.i use it every 25k,and (touch wood) no funny noises/smoke YET.expect oil consumption to be better than 500k per litre or a rebuild is needed.

No more than 1 quart between oil changes ... usually about 3000 miles under most circumstances.

What is normal oil consumption?

you may want to upgrade your oil to a thicker oil that helps alot more than people think its normal anywhere from 1qt to 1/2 a qt every 3000 miles that sounds pretty good and a healthy engine upgrade on brands and viscosity that should take care of that but it will burn more oil if the engine is being broken into for the first time if its brand new

Vw passat 2008, 3600 miles, using oil, has soot at exhaust pipes

the oil consumption could be worn piston rings or the egr is clogged and forcing oil into the air intake but that new of a car its unlikely unless someone sugared the gas tank the sooty exhaust could be from the oil consumption
