Pull a fuel line, turn on the key to check for fuel flow. If that doesn't work, plug the fuel line back in, pull a spark plug, connect the wire and crank it to check for spark arcing across the plug. Engines need 4 things to run: fuel, spark, compression and timing. Only lack of spark, fuel and/or timing will keep it from even trying.

Olds cutlass supreme keeps stalling. i drove it to ludington just fine and on the way back it just died. had it towed home and tried to start it up again at home and it fired right up several times and ran...

TRY CHANGING FUEL FILTER,COULD BE CLOGGED FUEL FILTER,FUEL PUMP FAILING,FUEL COULD BE CONTAMINATED WITH WATER.IF FUEL SYSTEM OKAY,CHECK FOR SPARK AT SPARK PLUGS,COULD BE FAULTY IGNITION MODULE OR FAULTY IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE I WOULD HAVE VECHICLE CODE SCAN FIRST BEFORE SPENDING MONEY.

Car wont get gas

Hello!

First turn the car to the run position, (not cranking but the position where the key would rest after start) go back to the gas tank and listen for a constant "hum" or electrical motor sound, if you dont have that your fuel pump is dead.

If you hear the fuel pump constant sound then the problem is up stream, this could be a clogged fuel filter, fuel regulator problem or even clogged injectors.

If I had to guess it would be the fuel pump as the other things would or could still have the car somewhat running.

I hope this helps.

My car is a 1989 cutlass supreme international, when I try to start it, I have to pump the gas alot........any help would be greatly appreciated engine is 3.1

The cold start valve may not be working as it should. The cold start valve supplies a rich mixture of fuel when the engine is cold. If it is not working you will experience hard starting. It can also be a partially clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. First thing to do is replace the fuel filter. If the symptoms persist then have a fuel pressure test run to rule out a weak fuel pump. If the pump is good then check the cold start valver wiring. Check the valve for leaking. The solenoid may be defective or the O rings need replacing.

This could be a lot of things, fuel pump pressure not enough(new fuel pump)or spark plugs and air filter need to be replaced(flooded plugs and air filter stopping up)timing has jumped,or maybe a blocked fuel filter?

My 89 Cutlass had a strange starting problem too...During cold weather she would crank, but she would not start...I could heat up the top of the engine with a hair dryer and she would start....Shop finally fixed her, replaced the COIL, the old coil was no bueno in cold weather!!!!

Car wont start

Basic things,

Is the cranking speed good? Slow?

Is the fuel pump working? If yes..
Is the fuel filter clogged?

Are the drive teeth on the starter itself ok?

Do you have good compression in all cylinders (if it is low then assume a slipped timing belt.)

1989 Jeep Wrangler Standard wont start

You have to check if this is fuel or spark related. You HAVE to put a filter in the system or the fuel injectors will get clogged. Check for spark first. If you have a good spark at the plugs, then your problem may be fuel related. If uou don't have any spark, then the problem could be a bad crank sensor.
