Check engine light but no fault codes

Check engine lights up but there are no fault codes, repair shop replaced flexi and now the light comes on, reseting it works for about 20 or 30 miles then the light comes back on. Shop said it's not their fault and needs the catalytic converter replaced. Is there a way to know if the catalytic converter is causing the issue or am i being taken for a ride? There is a sensor at the top where the pipes come out of the head, then there is a flexi under the engine, the second sensor is next and then the catalytic followed by the tail and muffler way out back.

First:
Take the Accent to AutoZone. They will scan the code (free) and give you a print-out with a "general" explanation (free). They can also reset it properly.

Next:
Let us know the codes and a summary of the print-out. We will advise you.

Answers to your questions:
The sensors at the cat are O2 (Oxygen) sensors.
Problem could be the cat or could be a faulty sensor. My money is on the O2 sensor.

Could be lots of things, like sticky fuel injector...
Don't change the catalytic convertor just yet.
My opinion is that the "shop" doesn't really know and is hoping that replacing the cat will fix it all (my opinion).

If you eventually change out the cat, go to a local muffler shop, not a national chain. They will do the same job for a lot less and not try to sell you other stuff.

I have 2 questions

Why would you not check for codes & make the proper
repair within a week of any check light, that is what is required

You say been on awhile, the vehicle had a fault code & system
problem & still does

Why would you have a timing belt & water pump installed &
any repair shop return your vehicle with a check light on

What sort of shop is that to return an undiagnosed vehicle

Neither you nor the shop seen to have any interest in
these check lights Why is that?

Why does the check engine light stay on in 1999 sienna ...it went off after new battery was installed...thenon again

The engine light stays on because the computer has detected a fault code, when disconnecting the battery the memory is cleared but the fault code will eventually be set in the computer again until the problem is fixed, since there are many reasons for the check engine light to come on it is necessary to connect the vehicle to a diagnostic computer that can read the codes, this can be done at most repair shops, the dealer or some autoparts stores.

Is the check engine light considered to be a sensor? My car failed smog due to sensor lights, do i have to go to a dealer to have the problem resolved, or can i do it myself

your car failed because they wont pass you until the light has been reset. the check engine light means the computer detected a fault in a sensor or system that may need repair..you"ll need access to a shop or someone who has an obdII diagostic reader and see what was faulted..you might get lucky and can have the fault reset. If there is a true failure in the system the light will come back on again and repair will be needed. usually the code will tell you which component or sensor has failed. if you like you can purchase one of these devices from an Autoparts store for around $100..these more expensive models are preferred because they not only will reset the fault but will list the code and tell you exactly which sensor has failed... that is if your car has an obdII type system diagnostic connector; usually located under the drivers steering column.

What are common reasons for the check engine light commming on, on a 2002 2.5 x-type sport

there could be many things causing your check engine light to come on . you would
need the fault code stored in the computer before anyone could tell
you anything about why the light is on. however if it runs and
drives normally its probably not to serious, stop by your local repair shop or buy a code reader and see what the codes are..

Check Engine Light

It sounds like you may have a failing Mass Air Flow sensor, seems like Ive been seeing these tied together quite often. Its a little tricky but a good repair shop should be able to test this sensor. I dont want to tell you to replace it without having it tested cause they are a bit pricey but check around, you never know. Hope this give youu another idea where to look.
