Transmission filter change-honda Odyssey-'06

'06 Honda Odyssey owner here, discovered there is an external trans filter, got part number and everything, how essential is it to change it? Is it worth the effort if I do it? Or is it worth the money to have Honda do it?

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: Transmission fluid/filter change in 2000 Honda Odyssey

I would not recommend using Dexron III. Honda Odysseys are prone to transmission problems. A drain and fill with Genuine Honda Fluid is Recommended. The drain plug can be removed with a 3/8 ratchet at the bottom of the trans. The fill hole is at the top of the trans. You remove it with a socket on a long extension. The capacity is close to 3 quarts

SOURCE: New torque converter.

A converter failure is likely to spit metal into the unit.
Likely to make it work, it will need to be rebuilt. Unless you get it for next to free, It's not worth it unless you need a project car to work on.

I will never understand why this service is so expensive at the dealership.

SOURCE: odyssey transmission that won't stay fixed

send me some tighter pictures , your location and the mileage.

  • I will be fair with you and tell you what I feel the should be done.
  • The oil pump pressure should be increased
  • The valve body gaskets replaced
  • Use dexron trans fluid ( Ford trans fluid has banana oil in it and is not reccommended on certain clutch composits. If motor oil, which contain certain additives, is put in a motorcycle it will cause severe clutch slippage and or grabbing.. So there you go. Give it some thought and I'll talk to my daughter who needs a vehicle that gets better mileage. Keep in mind that most shops buy their lubricants in bulk, sich as 55 gallon drums and as much as having a tanker fill a bulk tank on site. There are oils on the market that claim universal applicability and is much cheaper, It only makes sense that a shop that does any volume of trans work would go that route. Especially low buck shops.I doubt you have been spending all this time and money at a honda dealership. Right? So there you go. Three itemsand you can do all of them if you are mechanically inlined, Two of them if you are a logical person and only one as an amatuer tinkerer.
  • All the internal parts must be new so you can eliminate having to do any tear down or trans removal. Right?
  • Sincerely, Ned

My 2000 honda odyssey has no reverse and shifting from high to low the car shudders. Do I need to rebuild the tranny?

yes. I reccomend that you do a rebuild or buy a new one, buying one from a junk yard is not reccomended because you never know if your getting a good one or not, unless you can find one with low miles ( 30,000 or less) I would not recommend a used one. Honda always had issues with all their V6 transmissions. They use weak gears, and the internal tranny filter that you cant change unless you take apart the tranny is totally a bad idea. They have since upgraded the gears from 2004 0n and have put an external tranny filter on most odyssey models.

Where is the trasmission oil filter located on the 2004 Honda Odyssey

all filters for the transmission are located in the trans itself under the pan. unless you have an after market system added on for towing trailers then it should be close to the trans perhaps on the undre side of the car like an inline filter.

Do I need to change the transmission fluid in a 2005 Honda Odyssey?

Hello rsl4god.....Yes indeed without doubt... you should change transmission fluid regularly using only original Honda transmission fluid. This is a simple drain & refill job on the Odyssey
.
Heres my take on transmission fluid...Trans fluid is the life blood of your transmission. A quality trans fluid is more important to your trans than a quality oil is to your engine. As heat in the trans goes up, the life of the fluid (and your trans) goes down. Sadly most people ignore the transmission until it breaks.
Hope this answers your question...

2001 Honda Odyssey Transmission Problem

The Odyssey has notorious bad transmissions from 2000-2003. You will not get anything on a trade, the trans can be fixed for about $2k. If everything else on the van still works and you like it, figure you bought it again for $2k. I changen my wife's Odyssey trans at 175K miles for $2k and she is happy so therefore I am happy too :-)
