Has the clutch fan been tested? was it a very hot day when this happened? if so the electric engaged engine clutch fan may have fully engaged, it will really roar when it does.

if you were towing a boat i suspect the cooling fan locked up to cool the engine down, this is normal, don't worry about it, u should here my truck, sounds like a WW 2 fighter when the fan locks under a heavy load, most likely you just never had a situation that made it lock up, the fan clutch is automatic, it only locks up as needed, then unlocks, that is why it spins free now.

1990 gmc k2500 new 5.7engine & turbo 400 ,power lose & noise.

sounds as if you may be looking in the wrong spot. If different gearing is drastically changing the symptoms you may want to check the trans. or torque converter. sudden pop with engine rpm increase and lack of power sounds like possible band breakage in transmission or impellor breakage in torque converter.

2000 GMC Jimmy Transmission Whine

Does it sound like a loud winding sound coming from the front right side? I have a 2001 Jimmy and the 4wd tries to engage when driving up steep hills and going at highway speeds. The actuator vacuum switch engaged when the transfer case vacuum switch sends the vacuumed air to the actuator. What is happening is their is either a leak in the vacuum lines, a faulty actuator switch, or a faulty transfer case vacuum switch. When the jimmy has enough air pulling in, the extra vacuum is trying to push the actuator switch in when it is not supposed to. It is a much cheaper fix than a transmission. GMC should have recalled the whole 4wd system on any of the S10's, the JImmy's, and Blazers.
