check your fuses first. next, its most likely your sending unit, usually located at or inside the gas tank. you can purchase a replacement fuel gauge sending unit on ebay for the lowest price. then have a trusted mechanic replace it. i had to replace the unit on 2 of my vehicles.
No, the gauge is mechanical, there is a plunger in youre gas tank that lifts and lowers the gauge based off the amount of fuel in the tank. The gauge might just be loose, you can attempt to take the dashboard off and check but thats a pain, A auto repair can take a look at it for you for cheap.

I have a 2001 sl1 and the same thing occured but also the rpm gauge and the speedometer registered nothing. They all just sit at e or 0. Approx 20 miles later the car died.
