Question about 2000 Lexus RX 300

1 Answer

The back latch won't open now on the trunk door. All kinds of rust chunks were falling out of it when we tried to close it. Now it's broken. It didn't want to close at first now it won't open at all. Seems like handle and latch are both broken. Easy cheap fix????

There is no easy cheap fix especially if you rush into it. It can be $300 in parts, plus your efforts. The handle for the back htach has likely rusted a ad seized. If you put your hand on it you can likely move it back and forth and then activate the lock and unlock modes with your power switch inside the vehicle.
The wide plastic trim above your license plate MAY need to be removed, the problem is it's retainer bolts will also be rusted. Access is from the inside underneath the back door trim panel and as you attempt to remove them they tear out of their plastic mounts in the molding.
There is a pivoting handle underneath the trim which is the one you normally grip to open and close the door manually. It is likley seized at it's pivot point due to rust buildup. If you can put a fine long balded screwdriver up beside the handle and twist gently and scrape, while spraying with a rust buster of some type, you may be able to free the handle, temporarily and rust will crumble out during the process.
If this does not free it, the bolts holding the trim must be removed to give you more access. At this stage the bolts often shear from the plastic outer trim and require the entire panel replacement.
Go to a LEXUS dealer and get the cost first and ask to see the components on screen or in hand, which you are working on before you take the plunge. Explain to the parts counter that you may need the parts and are trying to evaluate the task at hand. Then decide what you are prepared to spend.
FYI An experienced tech can seldom save the outer trim so be prepared....Best of luck, be gentle and patient

HOW TO TURN OFF THE TRUNK OPEN ALARM

The 2012 Camry's trunk lid has a 'trunk open' alarm that shows up on the instrument panel as 'door open' red icon. It also turns on the door open beeping sound so long as the trunk lid is open. This is normal and is usually not a problem..

However, if you should need to carry a large item in the trunk and can't close the lid, be prepared to listen to the incessant door open sound with no means to turn it off!!

The trunk lid alarm 'switch' is operated by the trunk latch when you open or close the lid. By manually operating the latch to it's closed position, you can temporarily silence the alarm.

Using a small screwdriver, you can easily press the actuator and turn the alarm off.

**WARNING**
YOU MUST RETURN THE ACTUATOR TO THE OPEN POSITION (ABOVE)
(ALARM ON) BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE LID. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY DAMAGE THE LATCHING MECHANISM
**WARNING**

DO THIS WITH THE TRUNK OPEN LEVER OR WITH THE REMOTE TRUNK OPEN BUTTON.

IF YOU TRY TO CLOSE THE LID WITH THE LATCH IN THIS POSITION YOU MAY DAMAGE OR BREAK THE LATCHING MECHANISM

Why trunk lock not closing complete ?

It possibly it ran off balance. Try opening it, and locate a small toggle switch located near the latch of the trunk door (top door) and play with it for a little while. The bottom part of the latch will rise and fall. Do this until the bottom latch reaches it's peak and close the trunk. Should be as good as new.

My Honda Accord latch is broken. I can not open the gas tank door and the trunk won't close. It has to be a problem in the latch because it controls both gas tank door and trunk door

emergency release should be in the trunk as for the closing of the trunk, you need to disconnect the cable at the trunk latch until you can get it fixed

2003 VW Jetta trunk does not open

most likely cause is latch cover plastic has broken and got lodged in the latch mechanism. now the fun part, fold down back seat , slide into trunk with a phillips screwdriver a flashlight and a large strait blade screwdriver, once in trunk remove trunk cover, then with strait blade unlatch the trunk. once lid is open remove latch and take out broken plastic to free up latch and reinstall then retest before closing trunk.

Trunk is broken.

With the trunk open try putting the key in and turning so that the latch swings open. This may be the problem. The latch may be stuck closed. with the key turned make sure the latch is open if it is not then take a scrwedriver and pry on the latch with the key turned to open it. Then try to close the trunk. I hope this helps. Don't forget to rate my answer. thanks.
