Very easy open house remove old air filter, vacuum out housing and replace with new filter....should take about 5 minutes...

SOURCE: Fitting air filter to E46 320d
remove engine plastic covers by taking out the 5mm allen key bolts,, then remove the pollen filter and cover on the bulkhead, under the filter there are 4 , 30torx bolts , remove these and remove plastic bulkhead, then remove the 5mm allen key bolts holding the air filter cover to the engine, then remove the cover , change filter ,

What it sounds like to me is that they didn't replace the "brake sensors" when they did the job. They are a seperate part and if whomever changed your brakes didn't charge you, I think like $20, for the part, then that's the problem.

I assuming that you have an E46 bimmer. you can find an exploded view of the m79 320d engine here.
That will solve all your parts locating problem for your car..
