Question about 1987 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Question regarding 1987 pontiac firebird 2.8 litre V6. I followed the fuel line from the tank, made sure the filter was clean and followed it through right up until the manifold and undone the fuel line, when you turn the key on the ON position without turning the engine over, fuel will pump out of the fuel line for about 2 seconds. Is that normal or should it keep on pumping fuel when the key is in the ON position? As this vehicle has some sort of a fuel/regulator/or fuel pump problem. Many thanks in advance Danny

Yes that is normal, as your fuel pump will cycle to "charge" the lines with pressure. Make sure you have spark. Also, if you can, plug a noid light into the injector harness to see if it's pulsing as it should while turning over.

I ran outa gas and now my car starts but when u push the gas it dies

There is a screen on the inlet of your fuel pump (internal to tank) and an in-line filter external to the tank. Running out of fuel puts all deposits on the screen and filter, clogging them up. Clean the screen, replace the filter.

Need to drain fuel

Two way, one is that there is a drain plug on the bottom of the gas tank that you can undue, or you can remove the fuel line before the fuel filter and drain it that way

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following: NOTEThe fuel pump strainer must be in a horizontal position and must not block the float arm travel.
    • Fuel pump with new strainer onto the sending unit
    • New O-ring in the tank opening groove
    • New O-ring on the fuel sender feed tube
  2. Fold the strainer over itself and slowly position the sending assembly in the tank so the strainer is not damaged or trapped by the sump walls.
    • Retaining ring
    • Fuel tank. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    • Fuel filler cap
    • Negative battery cable
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, then back to the ON position. Check for fuel leaks

87 firebird fuel pump

Remove the exhaust, drop the rear end, remove the fuel cap, and surrounding rubber flange. remove the two hanger straps (be sure to have fuel tank supported so it doesn't just fall out. Remove hoses/electrical connector. Pull tank out, and remove metal lock ring that holds fuel pump assembly in place. Remove fuel pump assembly. Installation is reverse of removal. I have had 7 of these cars, and am currently driving one now. If you have any other questions about it, please ask!
