Question about 1992 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

About a week ago my car started having trouble starting. It cranks but won't catch on. I noticed it would have trouble with power going up hills. The last couple days I would start it by popping the clutch but then today I had more trouble getting it started this way and then it just had no power to go at all. It's a 92 jetta. I'm broke and am trying to figure out what's wrong and how much I'mm looking at to fix it. Thanks Tanya

Hey tanya, it really sounds like your battery is shot. I would take it to the local autozone or somewhere and have it tested. Or it may be your alternator. One or the other i am sure. good luck girl

My 93 Altima will not start. I did the self diagnostic and got code 55?? It started a few weeks ago ran great for the weekend, got it to work and would not crank to go home.

Josh, Code 55 for your Altima simply means no faults were found/no malfunction. Do you mean car would not crank(engine not turning over) or did you mean engine will crank, but not start. I will post troubleshooting links to both conditions below. If not comfortable, have a good Technician look at it, diagnose and estimate repair.

I wouldn't think catalytic converter, without it giving some indication that it was going bad, but without testing it is hard to say.
When it cranks and won't start, check for battery voltage to the coil on the dark green wire, with key ON. If you have power at the coil, it might be a bad coil. If no power to the coil, it could be a Crank Position Sensor or the Cam Position Sensor inside the distributor. If one of those is bad, it can stop the computer from sending power to the coil.
Good luck.

I have 4 cylinder 99 model honda accord. It has 155000 miles. Neer had problem before. Now it has started giving starting problem. After apprx. 10 to 12 cranking, it does start. I am noticing that...

If the battery , plugs and wires are gin good shape but you are still having hard starting problems, and you don't notice that the engine is weak while driving, there is probably an issue with your starter. If the starter motor is weak, it will not be cranking the engine enough to get it started right. The solenoid could not be transferring enough energy to the starter motor as well. Depending on the car, these could be two pieces of the same part, or it could be two separate parts -- a Haynes manual would help you determine whether it is one or two parts in your car .. or a mechanic could tell you. These are relatively inexpensive parts, and tend to be one of those parts that go after 10 or more years of use.
If you have noticed that your car has trouble when going up hills, or when carrying a full load of people, then you might have an issue with your fuel pump -- if it is weak, it will give you issues starting ... but it will also make your engine feel sluggish when driving (especially up hills or when carrying more weight than normal). This is not likely the problem if you are only having trouble starting the car, and don't notice any issues while driving.

Chrysler Intermittent Starting Problem

I have the same problem with my 2004 Chrsyler Concorde, however mine didn't start doing this until a recall involving reprogramming the cam shaft sensor was done. But I have exact same issues and no trouble codes appear for dealer either. My guess is that it is the cam shaft sensor, which I am going to get replaced. If you solve yours first, please post and let me know.

Will crank but won't start

I have seen a lot of trouble with coil packs lately. The first thing I would do is put a coil back on that I knew would make the motor run. It would not surprise me to hear that the new one is also bad. I don't think I would buy a new one until I was sure that the one on the car is bad. my suggestion is a no-cost method to know for sure.
If that does not work I would get a gauge and check the fuel pressure.
Also check to see that the timing belt is not broken. Look in the oil cap filler to see if the valve train moves while someone cranks the motor.
This will keep you busy for a while. Let me know what happens.
