Question about 2005 Dodge Neon

Suspect the fuel filter.

It seems to be "blowing by" every 10-12 seconds. But not affecting the drivability of the car. I began hearing it about two weeks ago after never hearing anything since the car was new.

My 1993 geo prizm car cranks very well but if i try to start it, it will not start, it seems that there is no gas getting to the engine

A couple of ways to check if you don't have access to a fuel pressure gauge. You should hear a brief hum or buzz from the gas tank area just by turning the key to on, not start. The fuel pump is supposed to turn on for 2 seconds to put pressure in the fuel line and at the injectors. If you hear nothing, the fuel pump may have failed, but check the fuel pump fuse to know it is not blown . To check further, spray a shot of starting fluid into the air intake housing-take off the big air boot from the air filter housing to the engine, and spray inside there into the engine. Now try to start the car. If the engine coughs to life and tries to run for a few seconds, then you know it wasn't getting gas, and that usually is a bad fuel pump or a totally clogged fuel filter. To check the filter, take it off and blow into the outlet side first and see if what comes out looks clean. Then blow from the inlet side and make sure the filter passes air, that it isn't blocked. If the filter was clean, it must be the pump. It is supposed to turn on briefly with key turned to on, and then it runs constantly when the engine is cranking or running. So it has had a good long life since 1993. The definitive test of a bad pump would be to find live power at the fuel pump wire at the gas tank connector while the engine was cranking over. If power there, but no pump working, definitely time for a new pump.

Possible causes are as follows, I suspect you have an intake air/vacuum leak or a faulty MAF sensor. - Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

1997 dodgeram3500 goes 5 miles starts boging out starved for fuel

run fault codes and look for a canister purge valve problem as I suspect that what you have is a fuel tank not venting properly and causing a vacuum in the tank which is preventing fuel being pumped through the system ( same affect as blocked filters)

I was told it could be the fuel pressure. Fuel filter, fuel pump or just get a tune-up. Is that possible?

put key in turn to on position in 3 seconds for 3 seconds you should hear a buzzing sound from rear of car if you dont hear this its your fuel pump
dont start vehicle just turn to on

fuel filter runs along the chassis line pull off get new hose attach to end and blow out if air doesnt go out then bad fuel filter

MAF sensor and vacume leaks will alow the car to run but very rough
it wont cut the car off

please in future be more descriptive with questions as to what happened before the problem happened what it did and the sounds and smells you aquired

Car STILL will not crank after replacing fuel pump by reason of deduction and seems to not be getting gas to the engine & motor will turn over just wont start

Yes, if you hear the pump, the relay is ok. The filter should be replaced, or blown out clear, if you suspect it. A plugged filter will certainly keep the car from starting.

I have replaced the fuel filter and immediately afterwards the vehicle refused to start. I noticed that the fuel was not being pumped to the filter so I assumed that there is an aie problem. We used...

You really like to do things the hard and questionable way

Did you check fuel pressure?
Do you hear the pump run?
Did you put an amp clamp and meter on the pump fuse?

Why would you blow air into the fuel tank,
to try and ruin countless parts in the EVAP

Don't get air in the system, you turn key and start vehicle,it will
be gone in about 10 seconds, blown through the injectors

The fuel pump may be retired, mechanically or electrically

You'll enjoy removing the fuel tank.

While idling it began to sputter and died. It is

Replace the fuel filter. Have someone listen at the gas cap while you turn the ignition on without starting the engine. They should hear the fuel pump for a few seconds. If you hear nothing then either the fuel pump is bad, fuse is blown, or the fuel pump relay is bad. If you hear the pump it still may be defective and weak. A fuel pressure test will verify this.

Stopped while driving replaced fuel filter and pump and crank shaft senor

I suspect you have a bad camshaft sensor. It is part of the distributor. To check, remove distributor cap and rotor (1 screw for rotor) and check for brown dust. If yes, remove slotted wheel and clean optical sensor. If car starts, you need a distributor.

Crank sensor has no affect on system. It is used for back up only.

Can you hear pump run for 5 seconds when you turn key on?
