If your looking at the gas on the ground and it looks like oil its because the gas is cleaning what ever it touches on the way down including any oil that may leak from other areas the trail may find.
If it looks like oil at the immediate break there might be something else!
Please rate me thx :)

Any gas leak is a problem. iif you cant tell the difference if gas or oil, a repair shop can check it for you and recommend repairs.

2004 chevy cavalier wi'll not start unless I keep my foot on gas. Then it will start but won't stay running until it warms up. While driving it runs fine untill you brare then it stalls out.

Pressing the pedal down, puts in clear flood mode. Any applicable trouble codes? Did you use a gage and check correct fuel pressure, also, see if pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off. If it drops like a rock you have fuel leak. Pull vac line off fuel pressure regulator, where applicable, if fuel runs out, you have a faulty fuel pressure regulator. You could have fuel injector leak?
Smell of your crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change your oil and filter very often or fuel leak. There could be other issues? You have to start testing, somewhere.

Hi Jimmie:
Fouling usually is coming from oil getting into that cylinder. Possible source will be oil rings or bad valve guide/seal.
Have you checked the compression?

Best to track down the source of the gas smell. Don't need engine fires. Run it a bit until you smell the gas. then shut it down and use your finger tips to feel for leaks at all of the gas line fittings, especially on the pressure side of the fuel pump. Look for places where dirt has collected, or where the area is cleaner than that surrounding it. Dust will collect on a small amount of gas, and will be washed away by a bigger leak.

I like your comment, " The harder you run it, the better it runs".
I've a Chevy big block in a dump truck. The instructions should say, "Run it like you hate it". It likes it.

Cheers,
Ted

@I think I have a fuel leak on my 92 Chev Cavalier, I think it is on the top of the motor but not sure, but I can smell gas and I am not getting very good gas miledge

look on the fuel rail(top of engine metal lines that connect to the fuel injectors)on the fuel
rail you will see a valve. there will be a fuel line screwed into the valve & a vacuum hose
it may also have a schaider valve on it for testing fuel pressure
this is the fuel pressure regulator. remove the vacuum hose & see if it is wet/gas
replace the valve if gas is in vacuum hose

its also a good idea to change the oil & filter because excess gas will end up in engine oil

Car seems to be flooded, smell gas and ignition just whirs when trying to start, how long do I need to wait before trying to start again?

I wouldnt start it again till you check the fuel lines for leaks(dont want to burn it up) I then suggest you look for vacuum leaks & do a compression test.pull spark plugs & look for oil fouled spark plugs &smell & observe for signs of raw gas.keep posted

I smell gas a little in my 1990 ford taurus any idea where to start looking???

First, take a quick sniff of the exhaust when the engine is idling. If you smell gas there, check your spark plugs and wires to eliminate misfires, then check for leaky fuel injectors (leaking excess fuel into a cylinder).

If the exhaust smells normal, you'll need to inspect the fuel delivery system. The most probable place for a leak would be the fuel lines under the car; it's old enough that a line could be rusted through and have a pinhole leak somewhere. If you suspect a spot but want to verify it by turning on the engine to pressurize the line, be sure to wear safety goggles. You don't want gasoline sprayed in your eyes.

Have a gas smell near top of motor-is there a gas line from fuel pump to fuel injection

Yes there is a line from the pumt to the injectors....and also a return line. It is unlikey to leak a small amount from this, as any leaks there are under pressure and spill massive amounts...Look around for smaller leaks, often in fuel vapor recovery system...Be sure gas cap is correct one and installed correctly.

I stopped for fuel yesterday and minutes after driving I could smell oil/gas? I stopped and put oil in sae5-30 and minutes later I could still smell oil??? Today I drove to work (20 miles) and didn't smell...

If you had to add oil, more then likely there an oil leak could be a gasket or oil seal, where ever the leak is at it's falling on the exhaust manifold and burning the oil, that's what you smell. Have it check cause low oil will damage you engine.

1996 cavalier; When I start the car; it smells like gas when the heater is on. The man at mufflerman changed the catalitic converter for $400 but it's still the same Betty

Your fuel pressure regulator may have gone bad and needs to be replaced if it's gas you smell. I am guessing you mean gasoline and not exhaust gas or oil burning. When the fuel pressure goes bad, it tends to leak gas. There is a rubber diaphragm that breaks and that is when the gas starts to leak on to the engine giving you the smell of gas only when the engine is running. The fuel pressure regulator is located on the fuel injector rail and can be replaced in 10 min with common tools and cost around $15.00 at Auto Zone or NAPA auto parts store. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon and be safe.
