Question about 1986 Pontiac Fiero

2 Answers

I have an 86 fiero auto trans. and it doesn't shift right. Goes into second fine and takes forever to go into third. After it warms up it gets a little better. Changed fluid and filter, same thing. Everything else fine.

I think the next thing you should check is the shft linkage adjustment and the throttle rod adjustment. These are very important to the smooth gear changing. Check the bushings in the linkage and make sure they are in good condition. Replace any that are worn. Make sure the throttle rod is lubricated and is not binding up. Inspect throttle rod linkage joints for looseness and the connections for corrosion and damage. I lubricate connections with a spray lubricant (DW-4) or white lithium. grease. Good Luck

More than likely. one of the front wheel speed sensors has gone bad. I believe the computer uses this input as well as the speed sensor on the transmission to determine shift points. In order to find out which sensor is bad, a technician will need to hook up a high-end scan tool.

Ok my 1986 Fiero 2m4 wont come out of reverse it was hard 2 shift gears all day yesterday until about 4 o clock now the transmission shifter just moves around freely but like i said its stuck in reverse...

Manual or auto?

It's gotta be the cable/linkage. You just have to inspect them and see if something is worn or snapped. They get old and crusty and need to be replaced eventually. I had to replace my shift cable on my 86 se with the 5-speed getrag.

Hopefully it's not the actual tranny....?

I am far from a trans. specialist but this sounds like a foreign body (dirt maybe) got in the valve body.

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo hesitates in 2nd gear when cold

Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.
