Question about 2002 Isuzu Trooper

Engine surges at about 2000 rpm. Tach increases about 200 rpm and a ''roaring'' sound can be heard but very little is felt in movement of the vehicle. It is getting progressively worse.

Got a continuous red warning light on the dash - has an exclamation mark in the middle
i dont have a handbook etc so what could this be? anything serious?
all other indicators r good eg temp oil batt guages etc
please help...

One thing to check on this vehicle is the air intake tube, It is the big rubber hose that allows air into the intake it should be about 4 to 5 inches around. it is very common to get cracks in the grooves and creates a vaccum leak which can cause your idle problem. the 1.8L J18 engine, same as the older Sidekick sports used.
same engine , know it I do.
its the precursor to the J20, (j18 is under-stroked, j20 with many of the same parts. inside)
the back fire means explosion sound to rear end of tail pipe?
yes, that is rich raw fuel in the muffler. plus Air.
if there are exhaust cracks and then engine goes rich this can happen( a double failure)
if how ever BACK means, back to the Air cleaner, then that be different reasons, (timing)

SURGE,. you never said.

does engine get hot? 180F or more and holds (y/n)
ever get a full tuneup this decade,
most dont so i tell you, bad spark causes, misfire and raw fuel is wasted to the exhaust and sure can go boom.

surging usually means the ISC can not control idle
so it hunts, (a suzuki software engine on all 90s engines)
PCM errors, inside it. (dangerous too)
a modern car, if idle goes too high the ecu commands the ISC closed
and holds it there solid, (safe way , no hunting allowed now)]
so if this car surges, it's , lean engine.

some think flooding is surging.
and this is usually below 800 rpm,
almost stalls, then corrects, seems like a surge.

next time post rpm range of surge.?????

do not drive a surging engine, do not be like Toyota drivers. (over 800 rpm hot)

surge from 400 -800 rpm is class 1 surge.
surge from 800 to say 2000 RPM is class2, and very dangerous to some folks, (key off, get car fixed, tow it)

The ECU controls idle speeds. (hard coded servo controls)

F22a engine produces strange noise most obvious at 2000 rpm, what could the problem be?


Without a general description of what the noice sounds like, squeal as compared to knocking, it is impossible to help you. Engines make a lot of different noises, so try and help by describing noise. I would suspect it is belt related, or tension pulley related as these are RPM variable noises, belts tend to slip when you accelerate and can be quite loud with a serpentine belt as example.

1999 Silverado has an engine surge of 200-500 RPM at 45 to 55 MPH


sounds a little like a cruise control problem.
they used to have a centering adjustment that kept the speed within a range. If the range somehow shifted to the high end this would cause your surge. it would be a screwdriver slot on the outside of the case.cw increase ccw decrease. yours is set too high or cw.
I work the screw back and forth several times in case dirt entered the cruise module.

Car does not start plus the tach needle jumped 2000 rpm with nothing runnig. I have already disconected start circuit white/white with red stripe and I had every thing else working fine for about a month,...


Here the good thing and this it will make it easy, The reason for that jumping tach meter tells you that there is spark and no fuel. Without fuel the spark KV voltage is 30kv. and it report to the tach. So you got spark and no fuel. If you had fuel the tach will show during cranking little tiny,tiny movement that you wont even see. So do this turn the key in the run position cycle it do you hear a humming noise from the rear you should that is the pump, they are sort of loud, If you dont you'll need a fuel pump. Even if you heard the fuel pump the fuel delivery may be low of pressure to start the engine. by the way try this have some one crank it and you hit the bottom of the tank may be you can shock it back.

There appears to be a thermal movement of choke mechanism that comes about once vehicle is warmed up. Check the chock connections, hot water pipe and linkages tight or clear.

if it does it then stops then sounds like your fan clutch working and is normal
