There are a few things to consider first,1. is it the bearing alone worn? you have to check the condition of the crank shaft jurnel were the bearing works,if ok then you are good togo but if not then you are looking at either machine shop work on the shaft or replacing it with a used unit in good condition since cost is a factor, or you can take the chance and put up the bearing as is and hope for the best,to save time and if you'r up to it look for a used engine in good condition and swap the hole assembly out should take a week end with some help from the guys, any way if you insist. 1. you drop the sump, find the # 1 main bearing cap # should be stamped on it re move the two bolts and remove cap, take note of mounting, remove bearing halfs, to remove bearing half on block use a flat head screw driver and push it around the jurnel there should be mounting tabs on bearing to install take the bearing half for the block place oil on inner face and slide int place making shore tab fits in mounting goove install cap half bearing and install tourque bolts re install sump refill engine oil and hop for the best

It has a 351 Windsor motor in it. I has a terrible knocking sound. We replaced the main bearing and timing chain. What could it be?

How were the rod bearings? I always check them whenever replacing the main bearings. Why did you only say "main bearing"? There are always more than one.

could also be part of the fuel pump dropping do into the oil pan is now hitting the crank, but you checked the oil pan for "bits and pieces" when you took it off to change the main bearing - right?

Can lifters be replaced

Oh yea, lifters can be replaced , best if you replace cam an lifters together ! Loud knocking is not usually associated with lifters , they usually make a ticking noise ! Knocking noise is most usually in the bottom of the motor , main or rod bearings . most of the time rod bearings !

After replacing all the rod and main bearings, and the oil pump, i am still getting a knock from the #1 cylinder.the bearings show no abnormal wear.its a 95 4.0 w/ 110,000 miles and yes i primed the pump,...

Hi...I responded to your earlier post.
I asked if you had plasti-gaged the crank journals before putting it back together. Sometime s one or more journals are more worn than the others and require a slightly over-sized bearing. If one journal is undersize it will cause a knock. Additionally I mentioned that the wrist-pin may be worn (the pivot pin that connects the piston to the connecting rod) An experienced tech can hear the is a slightly different, double knock. Less likely, but can happen, a piston skirt may be worn. That can sound like a knock. Older 4.0 engines were famous for that but haven't seen one recently. (usually noise subsides a bit as the engine gets hotter) What does your oil pressure look like? sometimes the camshaft bearings can wear enough to lower the crank pressure and cause knocking as well. (unusual but if engine was starved for oil before replacing the crank bearings it is a possibility.)

At idle the oil pressure like comes on and engine knock 1989 cadillac brougham l9ower engine main bearings have been replaced as well as oil pump

If you have a HT4100 engine, the block is aluminum and the design is poor. It is quite possible that the main bearing saddles are out of alignment and that's causing your problem. That condition can only be corrected with an align bore which requires total engine dis-assembly. On an old vehicle, it is just way too expensive.
If you really want to keep the car, consider an engine upgrade but that too costs a lot.
I know that this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it is what it is...
good luck!

Mysterious knock from motor

the noise is characteristic of this 4.1 liter ht4100 engine. the problem lies in the #1 main bearing clearance. this noise is very common on this engine and will clear up when replacing #1 main bearings but might return after you put some miles on it. i fixed a lot of these as a cadillac tech for many years. good luck!!

Oil pressure drops when idling and knock from main bearing.

How many miles on it? Could be the oil pump if the oil level is full.

Knocking noise in engine 1998 jeep cherokee

Knocking noise can come from one of three places. Broken flywheel, Worn rod or main bearing. (bearing problems usually are accompanied by lowered oil pressure) An experienced technician can usually tell which is which. If bearing wear is on the rod bearings only and is light, it can usually be corrected. Main bearings require engine removal and is far more expensive. The oil pump should be replaced with either, but is not the cause of the problem. Extreme wear on bearings will also damage crankshaft. If so, it must be replaced.
