If its front wheel drive than be careful. not much room to work. if you have never done one before than look for it to take atleast a good week

On your back in the yard? or do you know what you are doing? a trans shop could replace it in 2-3 hrs, you may take all day or more.

get the codes first ,as it can be your linkages under the car that is loose from your gear-stick to your gearbox.or it can just be a need for a fluid change .

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Yes it's the tranny but nothing fatal on this. I strongly suggest that you replace the transmission fluid. If the fluid is burnt hard shifting is expected specially on warm temp. Have a fluid change and you'll be good.

Hope you find this information helpful enough and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I have a 98 ford windstar, and the tranny went out in it. so i went to a junk a yard and bought a 98 ford windstar tranny from them. my dad took out my old tranny that was in the van and said that both...

You answered your own question.
They don't look the same,so why not return it.

Having owned a Trans Shop, I will tell you, getting a used trans will be the worst auto repair decision of your life.

Your buying something most likely worse than your pulling out of yours.

All Auto Trans need to be perfectly super clean inside to work well.
80% of all failures are due to not changing the fluid every 30,000 miles or two years.

Your best bet is what is called over-the-counter. You drop off your trans at a shop, they rebuild it with the latest updates and you install a rebuilt converter, adding a quart of fluid first.

All transaxles, especially van type ,don't hold up well. Not many see 100K.

You never want to have a front end collision with a van and expect your quality of life to be very good afterward. A larger SUV is safer and rear wheel trans, hold up pretty well.

ITS VERY MESSY UNLESS YOU HAVE A BIG PAN TO CATCH ALL THE TRANNY FLUID, BRING IT TO A TRANNY SHOP INSTEAD, PAY SOMEWHERE FROM $75 TO $100

When iam on a long trip it feels like my transmission is shifting hard, you can fill it all over the car and how do i fixs it?

If the tranny is jerking and jumping try giving it a complete wires new plugs and change the throttle position sensor which is probably the culprit as they go alot in these cars.

Hard shiftting transmission

On this van with this problem you should have it serviced by a flush tool. You can also get BG Trans additive to help this. I would say if you can drop the pan yourself do it change the filter add fluid and the BG additive. If you feel real good about your skills takr the upper trans line off the radiator drop it into a bucket add a funnel to you dipstick tube start the van and pour in the fluid at the same rate it comes out into the bucket. Do this untill you run 12 quarts through. Then stop the van reinstall the trans line. check the fluid level. If ok then install the BG trans additive. Google bgfindashop.com and enter your zip code that will tell you the shops where you can buy the chemical.
