I'm sure that if you ask 10 different people, you will get many different answers. No different from any product with multiple brands. People have favorites based on past good history, referrals from friends or "experts" or whatever. The main thing is that you maintain your vehicle on a regular basis based on your driving habits - changing your oil every 3,000 to 7,500 miles depending your environment (dusty, dirty etc), do you drive in the city frequently, does the engine work hard/ frequently high rpms? bulk oil to synthetic, stay consistent with your oil change intervals.

If I drive my 2007 beetle at or above 2500rpm for 10 minutes or more, and then slow down, I get smoke out of the exhaust - but only in the low gears (1,2,3) and only for a few days.

the symptom indicates failed valve stem seals
by deceleration , there is a vacuum created in the cylinders and that is sucking oil past the valve stems
the low gears is the highest vacuum creation as the engine is running at high rpms and when the throttle is closed the vacuum can go as high as 25" mercury in the manifold and cylinders
oil can also be drawn up past the oil control rings
the indications are that the motor is a bit worn but I am staying with failing valve stem seals or worn valve guides
a knocking sound on deceleration is worrying as it could be first signs of bearings or gudgeon pin problems
have a full wet/dry compression test done on the engine to determine condition
also have a mechanical oil pressure test done to determine oil pressure in operation conditions

What is the best motor oil and oil filter to use on my 04 beetle turbo?

I would use a Phram oil filter, but the oil you chose is up to you. Personally, I use Chevron RPM oil and have five vehicles and two of them have more than 200,000 miles on them.

My daughter went with Quacker State and we had to replace her engine after 72,000.

The secret is not which oil filter or what oil. Just checking making sure you don't get low and that you replace it every 3,000 miles.

How often should I change the oil in my 2007 New Beetle

Hi:
The standard rule of thumb is 3000 miles, but you can adjust that a bit longer if you don't drive hard or drive thru dirty conditions.

Oil for 2007 AUDI A4 2.0t Quatro

The best balance of price, quality, availability that I have found is Mobil1 synthetic - it's on Audi's approved oils list. With the 2.0T engine, you absolutely want to use synthetic (the Audi turbo fours are known for oil sludge issues), and you want to do a SeaFoam treatment every 15k miles or so - that combination will keep your engine in great running shape.
