Question about 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet

2 Answers

With my 1992 volkswagen cabriolet when the engine is at an idle the oil light comes on but only flickers. When you rev the engine the oil light turns itself off. This problem only occurs after the engine has been running for about half an hour and has had time to warm up. But the engine itself isnt overheating, or even getting close to it.

Hi,
the oil pressure is weak, simply use regular (not synthetic) 20/50 oil in warmer months. The problem with the light won't come back. For cooler months use regular 10/30 oil.
Cheers!

Intermitent low oil pressure problem

This vehicle as well most other Volkswagens of that era are notorious for oil sludge in the engine. Go to any Vw forum and you will see. You have to get this sludge out or otherwise it contaminates fresh oil and makes it lose its viscosity.

As far as the oil pressure, DO NOT DRIVE WITH NO OIL PRESSURE. If it is making noise from the valve train, there is no pressure. Be very careful running it, you may ruin an internal engine part. If you can idle it until the noise lightens up, then you can drive as long as there is oil pressure.

Cars starts easily but won't idle if you floor it, it rev and then stalls. Sometime it backfires as well. Any ideas?

My oil light is on, I changed the oil, replaced the oil pump AND the sending unit. At idle the light will come on and when the engine is revved the light goes off. Also a few days ago the oil light flashed...

a very important step before anything else is to get a gauge and measure the oil pressure because if there is pressure leak somewhere that did not achieve the pressure rise

Oil Indicator Flashes

The light doesn't indicate oil level, it indicates oil pressure. It could be a faulty sending unit, a plugged oil pickup (way down inside the oil pan), or the engine could just be worn. Also, if it's idling too slow it could be coming on. Time to go see your favorite technician. Good luck.

I have a 1992 VW Cabriolet about 3 000 rpm it

The vibration at that high rpm is most likely coming from the torque convertor and if a manual transmission , then clutch issues.
