It will probably fail after a few years ,so why go to all that trouble. Got to come off, then you most likely can't clean it,depending on the type of valve.

SOURCE: Can the EGR valve on a 1997 Acura CL 2.2 be cleaned?

Sometimes you can remove them and clean the carbon build up off of them and lubricate it before you reinstall it. Make sure you can find a new gasket before you take it off. Usually you ruin the gasket removing the EGR. Good luck. Please rate me so I know how I'm doing. Thanks.

SOURCE: How to clean EGR valve passages in 1993 Isuzu Trooper DOHC V6

You have to the EGR valve (sometimes the Intake manifold to EGR Vlalve line also). After you remove it take a drill bit the about 20 % smaller than the actual hole of the outlet side and rotate the drill bit with your hand to dig out the carbon. Aditionally the line coming from the intake manifold to the EGR valve will clog near the connection to the EGR valve. I use either a single piece of copper wire or the wire that you would use to tie ribar together to clean the line. When your done cleaning take a piece of vacuum line and connect it to the diaphram side and **** on it... then plug the line well with your thumb. Grasp the valve and blow thru it... Air should blow thru it freely. Remove your thumb from the vacuum line and try blowing again.. No air should pass thru the valve.
Then reinstall the valve and start the vehicle with the vacuum line disconnected (but blocked off) Use another piece of vacuum line connected to the diaphram again and **** on the line.. The vehicle should die or run really bad. If it does this then you cleaned it correctly.

SOURCE: egr valve cleaning

Hello! Cleaning works at times...The EGR is bolted to the back-side of the intake manifold...Two bolts hold it in place...More than likely it's fouled with carbon...However, looking at the age of the vehicle I would recommend replacing it...
Auto Zone sells them for $74.99...The part # is EGR3173...Guru........Saailer

SOURCE: to clean the EGR valve

Not sure why you would want to clean it and not just replace it..... it's a cheap part that is normally replaced as part of a tune up. To clean it, remove it and spray it out with a spray degreaser, engine cleaner, carb cleaner, etc. Make sure to rinse it completey and make sure it's thoroughly dry before reinstalling.

How do i clean the egr valve

Take the EGR valve off the engine, then use some fuel injector cleaner (like you pour into the fuel tank) to clean the pintle (shiny steele rod inside the egr valve) and the seat (the valve that opens and closes off the exhaust flow). Once the pintle and valve seat are clean, check for smooth operation by pressing the diaphram with finger tips and releasing. It should feel like it is moving smoothly both ways.

Code says bad egr valve replaced still throws code

V6? 4cyl? what is the code? there is no code that says "replace egr valve", the passages may be stopped up. open the egr valve manually (a scanner may be able to do thiis) and see if the engine idles rough or stalls out (it should if passages are flowing) if not you need to take valve off and clean the EGR passages. If you cant open the valve, take it off, one hole is exhaust. the other will be vaccuum, from the intake manifold. A bad map sensor could also cause a egr malfunction code.

My egr valve wont open complete is there an vacum assit available??

Do this egr valve is electrically operated. If your not getting enough egr flow .you can remove the egr valve and clean the passage way. Un-pluging the egr and taking the two 10mm bolts out of the egr valve. You can the use a pipe cleaner and carburetor cleaner to clean the passage way out of the excess carbon.

Wath P1406 Code means on a GMC jimmy 1996,

It's an egr valve problem (exhaust gas return) egr position sensor.
Take off the egr valve and turn it over and see if there is carbon build up in the ports, if there is clean it out with a pipe cleaner and a little carbon cleaner, just spray a little into the ports and clean it out. If that doesn't cure the problem, then either the sensor needs replacing, and or the egr valve.

OBD inspection: 1 trouble code reported:P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient Detected: This is a 200 Olds silhouette. Is this an easy fix?

Yes and know,it all depends on your experience with tools but you can do it if your follow instructions and take your time. I'll try to help you save some money and let you know that you can fix thins your self.
A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the egr (tube), most likely carbon buildup
  • The egr valve is faulty
  • The egr valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum
So we are going to remove the egr valve and clean it out with Carb cleaner, remove all the carbon build up that is binding the valve. If that doesn't not work or you thing there is too much carbon or the valve it self is still binding once it's cleaned, then just replace it. The other thing to is to replace the DPFE sensor but were just going to worry about the egr first since that is what is most common and a good cleaning will always almost fix the problem.
There is one bolt that holds the egr tube to it and two bolts that hold it to the intake manifold take them out, unplug the electrical connector and its off.  Once the egr is off, Spray it clean with Carb cleaner and make sure that there are no moving parts are binding and re-install. If needed replace the old gasket with a new one. Good luck and hope this helps and if your not sure where the egr valve is, it's just behind the throttle body. Good luck and hope this helps, Auto Zone can also give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done and you can also buy the replacement egr valve. But start with the cleaning first.

EGR Valve Cleaning on a 1999 4.3 Silverado

If it is not just badly clogged, the intake does not need to be cleaned out. If you want to clean it out then take some brake cleaner and spray it in there and wipe it with a rag. I have never seen someone have to clean the intake due to not being clogged. Just my expierence I would just change the EGR and go from there
